Multiple Sclerosis Blog - EverydayHealth.com

Mention of one of the original scams in a recent comment brought the topic, flooding with unexpected emotion, to me this week. I?ve touched on this subject before under the heading of MS Quackery and it?s time it was put to bed.

Mercury poisoning was first ?linked? to multiple sclerosis in the surrounds of Minamata Bay, Japan in the 1950?s. To be fair, looking at the symptoms of this massive episode which now takes on the name of the bay ? Minamata Disease, you can see why one might think of MS:

Symptoms include ataxia, numbness in the hands and feet, general muscle weakness, narrowing of the field of vision and damage to hearing and speech. In extreme cases paralysis, coma, and even death were possible.

Sound familiar?

The massive pollution of the bay with mercury by a local manufacturing factory fed bacteria which converted the heavy metal into an organic compound called methylmercury which fed smaller fish that in turn fed larger fish and then further up the food chain.

?Dancing Cat Fever? was what the locals called the disorder as small felines were the first land animals to begin showing signs of the neurological destruction of methylmercury poisoning; stumbling and falling. Soon birds that ate the poisoned fish were falling from the sky and not long after that, fishermen and their families began to exhibit MS-like symptoms.

Back in the days before MRI, it can be understood why some would think that their MS symptoms might have been linkable to mercury. I?ve asked my doctor if early exposure to mercury (yes, I know of exposure beyond fillings for me) may have ?caused? my symptoms. He showed me MR images of mercury poisoning and showed me mine. They look nothing alike.

Many in the western world have been exposed to mercury in the form of dental amalgam of silver. The more the horrors of mercury poisoning became known to us (think about the tuna scares in the ?70s, etc) the more suspect we became about those fillings.

An entire business built up around removal of dental fillings at about that time. One of the big factors these captains of MS Inc touted was that fillings could cause? you guessed it, multiple sclerosis.

Truth be told, even the FDA now states that some mercury likely does ?leak? from old fillings. Number of fillings has never been correlated to MS, no particular dentist or dental practice has been linked to increased incidence and, quite frankly, people with MS seem to have less mercury in our brains than controls.

The likely exposure to mercury vapor in the removal of fillings is many times higher than the 1-3 micrograms that the FDA advises may leak from old fillings. Consumer reports has even warned, on numerous occasions, of dentists who breaks the American Dental Association?s code of ethics by recommending that a non-allergic patient have fillings removed to prevent/cure MS saying, ?if a dentist wants to remove your fillings because they contain mercury, watch your wallet?

Multiple Sclerosis has been proven on several occasions to have nothing to do with mercury. Not mercury ingested from fish, not mercury from silver amalgam dental fillings, not even from mercury played with as a child (yup, that was me). If someone is telling you that your MS is due to your fillings, tell them they have no idea what they are talking about. It?s that simple.

Wishing you and your friends the best of health.

Cheers

Trevis

Putin calls for upgrade of Russian army

MOSCOW (AP) ? Russian President Vladimir Putin told the country's top brass on Wednesday to drastically upgrade the armed forces in the next few years as part of response to attempts by the United States and NATO to "tip the strategic balance" in the world.

In his address to Russia's defense ministry and top military officials, Putin said Russia is witnessing "insistent attempts" to change that balance and complained about U.S. plans to create a new missile defense system in Europe and the potential expansion of NATO to former Soviet republics.

"Geopolitical developments call for our response to be well-calculated and quick," Putin said, according to a transcript of his speech on the Kremlin's website. "The Russian armed forces must move to a dramatically new level of capabilities as soon as in the next three to five years."

The stated goal of the multibillion-dollar missile defense system planned for Europe is to protect the U.S. from Iranian missiles. But Russia has repeatedly criticized the plan, claiming it really is intended to counter its own missiles.

Putin blasted the legacy of former Russian Defense Minister Anatoly Serdyukov who was dismissed in November 2012 amid a corruption scandal involving billions of rubles reportedly embezzled by the ministry and affiliated firms.

While Putin linked the ouster to the corruption probe, most experts believe that Serdyukov was sacked because of an intensifying behind-the-scenes battle for the distribution of 23 trillion rubles ($750 billion) that the Kremlin plans to spend on buying new weapons through 2020.

Serdyukov demanded higher quality and cheaper prices from the military industry, often refusing to sign new contracts for months. He criticized arms makers for continuing to produce Soviet-era designs instead of developing new weapons, angering industry leaders with strong Kremlin connections. Under Serdyukov, the military purchased amphibious assault vessels from France, bought Israeli drones, Italian armored vehicles and other foreign weapons.

The current defense minister, Sergei Shoigu, has confirmed plans to form a new naval squadron that would patrol the Mediterranean Sea.

A small maintenance and supply base in Syria's Tartus, Russia's only naval outpost outside the former Soviet Union, is under threat because of the civil war there.

LA Kings trade Simon Gagne back to Philadelphia

The Los Angeles Kings traded Simon Gagne back to the Philadelphia Flyers on Tuesday for a conditional draft pick, sending the struggling left wing back to the city where he had his greatest NHL success.

Gagne spent his first 10 NHL seasons with the Flyers, but won his first Stanley Cup title last season in Los Angeles after a late-playoff return from a concussion. He hasn't scored a goal in 11 games this season for the Kings, who decided the veteran didn't fit in coach Darryl Sutter's system.

Before Gagne even got up the nerve to ask for a trade, Kings general manager Dean Lombardi sent him back to Philadelphia.

"They just did it on their own," Gagne said. "It just shows you the class those guys have. Even if it's hard getting traded in the middle of the season, going to Philly ? and they told me it was the best place for me to go ? they're really gentlemen to do that to me this year."

Los Angeles will get a third-round pick if Philadelphia makes the playoffs or a fourth-round pick if the Flyers miss the postseason.

Gagne had 259 goals and 524 points in his decade with the Flyers, who traded him to Tampa Bay in July 2010 partly to get under the salary cap. The Kings signed him a year later, but Gagne has scored just 24 goals in 108 games since leaving Philadelphia.

"This is a good player that I've known a long time, and I know that if he would have wanted to go anywhere, that would be the place he wanted to go," said Kings general manager Dean Lombardi, a former Flyers scout. "Given that we had to do this, if we can, I would certainly put him someplace I know he'd be happy."

Gagne scored a career-high 47 goals during the 2005-06 season while playing mostly on a line with Peter Forsberg and Mike Knuble, who re-signed with Philadelphia last month. Before the lockout last July, the Flyers re-signed Ruslan Fedotenko, who began his career alongside Gagne with the Flyers more than a decade ago.

Flyers GM Paul Holmgren spoke with Lombardi a few days ago about Gagne, but suddenly had urgency to add front-line depth. Matt Read is sidelined for six weeks with torn ribcage muscles, and Tye McGinn will be out for a few weeks after breaking an orbital bone in a fight with Toronto's Matt Brown on Monday night.

"He improves our depth up front automatically," said Holmgren, who traded Gagne three years ago. "He is a good two-way player that can skate. ... Coaches have watched tape of him playing, so we feel comfortable that he is fine. He seems excited to be coming back, and looks forward to an opportunity to play and help us."

The seven-time 20-goal scorer was sidelined for more than five months of his first season in Los Angeles with his latest concussion, but returned to action in the Stanley Cup finals. He played four games while winning his first NHL championship, but underwent neck surgery five days after raising the Cup for the first time.

Gagne's ice time was down sharply this season, and he had been a healthy scratch recently for the Kings (9-6-2), who have won four straight after a slow start. Gagne had five assists this season, but lost playing time recently to fellow veteran Dustin Penner.

Gagne only recently pulled up some of his Philly roots. Flyers coach Peter Laviolette has been renting Gagne's old house in Philadelphia's New Jersey suburbs for the past 2? years ? but Gagne recently sold the house, with the closing scheduled for March 15.

While Los Angeles only recently started clicking after a slow start, Philadelphia is off to just a 9-11-1 start despite scoring 60 goals, third-most in the Eastern Conference.

Gagne has a $3.5 million salary for the season and will be a free agent this summer, but Holmgren said the Flyers could afford him after losing players to injury.

Affymax, Takeda recall anemia drug Omontys after deaths

TOKYO/WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S.-based Affymax Inc and Japan's Takeda Pharmaceutical Co said they are voluntarily recalling all lots of anemia treatment Omontys (peginesatide) in the United States due to reports of serious hypersensitivity reactions, including some deaths.

As of Sunday, fatal reactions to the injection have been reported in about 0.02 percent of 25,000 patients after receiving their initial injection of the treatment, Affymax said in a statement.

The drug is used to treat anemia in adult dialysis patients, and has resulted in reports of serious allergic reactions known as anaphylaxis in some recipients.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration on Sunday alerted healthcare providers about the recall, and said it had received 19 reports of anaphylaxis from dialysis centers in the United States.

"Due to the severity of the public health risk, we want to be certain that healthcare providers stop using Omontys," said Howard Sklamberg, who heads the compliance office at the FDA's Center for Drug Evaluation and Research.

Sklamberg said the agency is investigating the products and facilities related to the recall and will provide updates once it receives more information.

Microsoft data compromised, raising fears of large-scale hacking campaign

Microsoft announced Friday afternoon in a company blog post that it had been hacked, in a similar intrusion to the ones that affected Facebook and Apple?earlier this month.

?During our investigation, we found a small number of computers, including some in our Mac business unit, that were infected by malicious software using techniques similar to those documented by other organizations,? said?Matt Thomlinson, general manager for Microsoft?s Trustworthy Computing Security unit, in the blog post.

Thomlinson said that the company chose not to make a statement during the initial information gathering process, which is consistent with the company?s security response practices. He also said that there was no evidence of its customer data having been compromised.

?This type of cyberattack is no surprise to Microsoft and other companies that must grapple with determined and persistent adversaries (see our?prior analysis?of emerging threat trends),? said?Thomlinson.

Twitter also announced on February 1 that user data for 250,000 of its users were potentially compromised in a security breach.

Reuters reported that the Twitter hack was part of the same campaign as the attack that had affected Apple and Facebook.

Utica shale wells producing huge oil and gas yields for Chesapeake Energy

Chesapeake had drilled 184 wells, including 45 producing wells, in the Utica play as of Dec. 31.

Chesapeake Energy Co. (NYSE: CHK) is satisfied with results from its liquid-rich Utica shale wells in eastern Ohio, reports the Akron Beacon-Journal.

The Utica play ?will be solid for a lot of years to come,? company spokesman Steve Dixon said Thursday as the Oklahoma City-based company held an earnings call with analysts.

Chesapeake, the top shale gas driller in Ohio, is projecting what the industry calls ?estimated ultimate recovery? of 5 billion to 10 billion cubic feet of oil and gas equivalents from each well over its lifetime in its core area of Carroll and surrounding counties in eastern Ohio. That is significantly higher than what has been reported from wells drilled in the Marcellus shale play in Pennsylvania, the Beacon-Journal reported.

There also are Utica shale numbers in the press release that Chesapeake issued with its fourth quarter earnings report. Among them: The company had drilled 184 wells, including 45 producing wells, in the Utica play as of Dec. 31 and plans to operate 14 drilling rigs there this year.

Women need college degree more to get good job

COLUMBUS, Ohio Student loans provide more help to women than they do for men in encouraging graduation from college, a new nationwide study reveals.

Findings showed that, on average, taking out loans actually makes graduation more likely for all students. But at a certain point which is about $2,000 lower for men than for women debt has diminishing returns and becomes less effective at boosting chances of graduation.

One reason loans help women more may be tied to job prospects for college dropouts which are much better for men than for women.

"At least early in their careers, women suffer more than men if they don't have a college degree," said Rachel Dwyer, co-author of the study and associate professor of sociology at Ohio State University.

"Women will go deeper in debt to finance college because they need the degree more than men if they want to earn a good living. Men will drop out at lower levels of debt."

Dwyer conducted the study with Randy Hodson, professor of sociology at Ohio State University, and Laura McCloud, assistant professor of sociology at Pacific Lutheran University. Their results appear in the February 2013 issue of the journal Gender & Society.

Data for the study came from 3,676 young Americans who participated in the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth 1997. The NLSY97 interviewed people between the ages of 13 and 17 in 1997 and then talked to the same people each year up to 2010-2011. At that time, the young adults in this study were 25 to 31 years old.

The NLSY is conducted by Ohio State's Center for Human Resource Research for the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

For this study, the researchers examined student loans taken out each year the participants were enrolled in college, and how much they still owed overall on their loans.

Women were more likely to take out loans than men, with 40 percent of women and 34 percent of men taking out loans on average each year.

"Clearly, educational debt was part of the college experience for many students in the 2000s," Dwyer said.

While college debt was associated with higher rates of graduation, there came a point when adding more debt no longer increased the probability of graduation.

For men, debt started having diminishing returns on the probability of graduation at a lower level ($12,711) than for women ($14,682). This was true even after the researchers took into account many other factors that influence graduation rates, including parental household income, race and ethnicity, high school grade point average, whether the student were married or had children, whether they attended a private or public college, and other factors.

Further analysis by the researchers suggested that the different job prospects for men and women may play a big role in how much debt students are willing to carry to graduate.

Results showed that men who dropped out of college had earnings similar to male college graduates, at least early in their careers. But women who dropped out earned about $6,500 a year less than women who graduated even after taking into account a variety of demographic factors that influence income.

"Men may drop out at lower levels of debt than women because they have better job prospects than women do without a college degree," Dwyer said.

For example, some men can still receive good pay in the construction industry and, to a lesser extent, in manufacturing. Women have less access to these types of jobs.

Of course, most men who drop out may be making a short-sighted decision, Dwyer said. By midlife, college-graduate men's salaries are on average $20,000 higher than those who did not complete college.

In addition, many construction and manufacturing jobs favored by high school graduates are cyclical, subject to loss during recessions, and more easily moved overseas, she said.

Some people are surprised that this study, and others, finds that student loans actually make graduation more likely, Dwyer said. While loans help boost graduation chances, she noted that graduation is only the first step young people must make sure they will be able to pay off the loans, an issue this study does not address.

Government backs Ofgem plans to make energy bills fairer

Ofgem said the reforms would begin to come into force this summer, while the cap on tariff numbers is planned to be in place from next winter.

Alistair Buchanan, Ofgem chief executive, said the proposals would see "the most radical shake-up of the energy retail market since competition began."

?My message to the suppliers is ? don't wait for the legal process to take effect. Most have already embraced the reform agenda and now the way is clear for all of them to work with Ofgem to bring in reforms as soon as possible.?

Angela Knight, chief executive of Energy UK, which represents energy companies, said: "The concerns of customers and politicians have been heard loud and clear by the companies [...] The industry will be working closely with the regulator and with Government on all the next stages of their reform programme.?

Mr Buchanan warned households this week to prepare for a sharp rise in energy bills within two years, as he said that British energy supplies are on a ?roller-coaster? heading ?downhill fast?,

Writing in The Daily Telegraph, Mr Buchanan warned: ?We have to face the likelihood that avoiding power shortages will also carry a price.?

Office Depot, OfficeMax in advanced merger talks

Office Depot Inc , the No.2 U.S. office supply retailer, is in advanced talks to merge with smaller rival OfficeMax Inc and a deal could come as early as this week, a person familiar with the matter said on Monday.

Both companies, which trail industry leader Staples Inc , are under much pressure from investors to boost profitability as well as shareholder value, and a merger would help them to cut costs, close stores and boost their clout with suppliers.

The deal is expected to be structured as a stock-for-stock transaction, the person said, but the source also warned that the talks could still fall apart.

Office Depot has a market capitalization of $1.1 billion while OfficeMax has a market value of $932 million.

Analysts have long called for consolidation in what they see as a cluttered sector, in which sales crumbled during the global financial crisis. Office supply stores are also fighting a battle for relevance, with shoppers increasingly buying their paper, toner and technology online or at mass merchants.

Office Depot declined to comment on the news of a potential deal. Representatives for OfficeMax were not immediately available for comment. The news was first reported by the Wall Street Journal.

Neuberger Berman LLC, one of OfficeMax's top investors and which has pressured the company to do more for shareholders, said it would support a merger with Office Depot Inc depending on deal terms.

Benjamin Nahum, a portfolio manager at the investment firm, told Reuters in an interview on Monday that his preference would be for OfficeMax to declare a special dividend before merging with Office Depot.

"In our view this would facilitate a fair deal," Nahum said, adding that OfficeMax shareholders should be compensated for "the balance-sheet strength that we bring to this combined entity".

Neuberger Berman had called on the company last June to return money to shareholders in the form of a dividend or share repurchases and raised the specter of a proxy fight.

According to Thomson Reuters data, Neuberger Berman owns 4.76 percent of OfficeMax, making it the third-largest shareholder of the Naperville, Illinois company.

Office Depot has also come under pressure, with activist hedge fund Starboard Value LP urging it last September to make some drastic cost cuts and take other steps to improve performance.

In 2011, Office Depot CEO Neil Austrian told Reuters that while the office supply retail sector was ripe for consolidation, antitrust regulators were sticking to an antiquated view of the sector and not letting key players merge.

The Federal Trade Commission rejected a $4 billion merger of Office Depot and Staples in 1997, saying it would lead to less competition and higher prices for customers.

Analysts now play down those concerns as mass merchants such as Target Corp and online chain Amazon.com become bigger players in the sector.

On Friday, shares of OfficeMax closed down 1.29 percent to $10.75 while Office Depot was up 2 percent to $4.59. U.S. financial markets were closed on Monday for a national holiday.

(AP) ? Pianist Herbie Hancock will celebrate the special connection between Turkey and jazz music forged decades ago when the Turkish ambassador opened his residence to white and black musicians at a time when segregation held sway in the U.S. capital.

Hancock, a UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador, is organizing a gala concert with jazz stars from around the world on April 30 at the famed Hagia Irene in the outer courtyard of Topkapi Palace in Istanbul, which has been designated the host city for the second annual U.N.-sanctioned International Jazz Day.

"There's an amazing history of the relationship between Turkey and jazz," Hancock told The Associated Press in a telephone interview ahead of Tuesday's official announcement of the 2013 International Jazz Day program.

It began in the '30s and '40s when the two sons of Turkish Ambassador Mehmet Munir Ertegun pursued their passion for jazz by frequenting the capital's black neighborhoods to buy "race" records not available elsewhere, and attend concerts at the Howard Theater, a mecca for leading African-American entertainers.

Their father readily agreed when the brothers began inviting musicians to the ambassador's mansion for Sunday lunches followed by integrated jam sessions in an upstairs music parlor. The guests included jazz royalty from the Duke Ellington and Count Basie bands such as Lester Young, Benny Carter, Harry Carney, Johnny Hodges and Rex Stewart.

Hancock says he was particularly impressed by a story told to him by Turkey's current ambassador, Namik Tan, about how his predecessor responded whenever outraged Southern senators would complain that "a person of color was seen entering your house by the front door (which) is not a practice to be encouraged."

The ambassador would offer a terse one-sentence reply such as: "In my home, friends enter by the front door ? however we can arrange for you to enter from the back."

"That was fantastic ... that he always had the embassy open to jazz musicians," Hancock said. "Think about the state of civil rights and race relations at that time."

After the ambassador died in 1944, his sons remained in the U.S. Ahmet Ertegun founded Atlantic Records where he helped move African-American music into the mainstream of American pop culture, launching the careers of Ray Charles and Aretha Franklin, among others. His older brother, Nesuhi, headed the label's jazz department, producing significant recordings by jazz legends such as the Modern Jazz Quartet, John Coltrane, Charles Mingus and Ornette Coleman.

Tan acknowledged the tradition by launching the Ertegun Jazz Series of concerts at the Embassy Residence in 2011. He hopes that International Jazz Day will further spotlight the "unknown, or even surprising" connection of Turkey with jazz.

"International Jazz Day 2013 will provide a unique opportunity to pay tribute to the legacy of the Ertegun Brothers by bringing together artists from all around the world to celebrate jazz music's universal messages of peace, freedom and fraternity in the unique city of Istanbul where continents and civilizations meet," Tan said in an email.

Hancock will kick off the April 30 celebration with an early morning educational performance for students at Galatasaray High School, Turkey's oldest secondary school. Two local universities will be hosting seminars, workshops, panel discussions, film screenings and master classes during the day.

The festivities conclude with an evening concert at Hagia Irene, known for its phenomenal acoustics, which is the city's oldest church dating back to the 4th century and now a museum. The concert will be streamed live and taped for broadcast on public television stations worldwide.

The lineup includes such American jazz stars as Hancock, Wayne Shorter, Jimmy Heath, George Duke, Robert Glasper, Christian Scott, Marcus Miller, Lee Ritenour, Al Jarreau and Dianne Reeves, with pianist John Beasley serving as musical director. The international contingent features Hugh Masekela and Abdullah Ibrahim (South Africa), Keiko Matsui (Japan), Anat Cohen (Israel), Milton Nascimento (Brazil), John McLaughlin (Britain), Igor Butman (Russia) and Jean-Luc Ponty (France), among others. Clarinetist Husnu Seniendirici and trumpeter Imer Demirer will represent Turkey.

Tom Carter, president of the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz, says Istanbul is symbolically well suited to foster the goals of International Jazz Day because it bridges two continents.

"We look at jazz music as a means of bridging people together around the world," Carter said. "Turkey is a Muslim nation that has embraced democracy and is a very open society. That's very much what jazz represents ? peace, harmony and democracy."

The Monk Institute is sponsoring the day's festivities along with the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization and the Istanbul Foundation for Culture & Arts.

Some 80 International Jazz Day events have already been confirmed in countries worldwide for April 30 ? from an open-air concert in Yerevan, Armenia, to a program "Jazz Across Borders and Cultures" with workshops, jam sessions and concerts in Swaziland.

Hancock hopes to build on the success of last year's inaugural event which included star-studded concerts at UNESCO headquarters in Paris, New Orleans' Congo Square, and the U.N. General Assembly Hall in New York.

"This was a special occasion to share the music with the rest of the world and have it honored in a way that made everybody proud," said Hancock. "It accomplished what I believe to be a new vision of cultural diplomacy."

Glenn Beck On Tea Party Recapturing Its ?Mojo?: GOP ?Will Become Less And Less Relevant? Every Day

Glenn Beck paid a visit to Bill O?Reilly on Monday night to talk about whether we?ll see a Tea Party resurgence ? and to chime in on the Republican establishment. Noting those Republicans he likes (and those he doesn?t), he chided the ?establishment? for ?betraying? their values.

Beck is ?done? with with the ?big government? Republicans, he said. ?The Republicans have betrayed their own values for so long.? Whereas those like Beck are just trying to push ?common sense.?

There are a few Republicans he does like, though, including Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY). Asked about Sen. Marco Rubio (R-FL), Beck said he hasn?t quite made up his mind. And straight-talking New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie? Beck used to like him, but now, not so much.

But back to the Tea Party, O?Reilly questioned whether it can ?recapture its mojo knowing that the press hates it?? What the press thinks doesn?t matter, Beck replied. Anyone who stands up for small government, he added, can have success (though some of those pesky, ?strange? libertarians are a different story).

?I am sure that the Republicans will become less and less relevant as every day that goes by,? Beck asserted. ?They?re becoming ? if they?re not already ? the Whig Party.?

If the economy is bad, O?Reilly argued, they could have a viable 2016 candidate. Beck wasn?t convinced, going after Republicans who have felt the need to become more moderate. Cutting spending is moderate!

O?Reilly noted it?s about leadership ? and segued into discussing the Department of Agriculture ?hiring a guy from Massachusetts to be politically correct? (referring to ?diversity awareness trainer? Samuel Betances).

With that, Beck was off: ?This government, under Barack Obama, is hiring people to teach people how to be racist.?

It?s a coordinated effort, he said, to teach government workers to be racist.

TV anchor accused of choking wife

DARIEN, Conn. (AP) ? A New York television news anchor fought with his wife and then choked her at their home and threatened her even after he was arrested, police said.

Officers received a call early Sunday morning from WCBS-TV anchor Rob Morrison's mother-in-law about what was going on at the couple's home in Darien, police said. Morrison had been belligerent toward his wife, CBS financial news anchor Ashley Morrison, throughout the night and ended up with his hands wrapped around her neck, leaving red marks, they said.

The arresting officers said they heard Rob Morrison threaten to do his wife more harm while they were processing him. They said his wife didn't seek medical attention.

A police mug shot of Morrison shows him with what appear to be a bloody cut on the bridge of his nose and a nasty bruise on his swollen bottom lip.

Morrison, who posted $100,000 bond, was due in court Tuesday. He faced charges of strangulation, threatening and disorderly conduct.

The couple's attorney said in a statement Monday they are cooperating fully with authorities in this "unfortunate incident."

"The Morrisons are confident that a full review of this matter will show that the allegations have been greatly exaggerated," attorney Robert Skovgaard said in the statement.

Rob Morrison, who has been a combat correspondent and was a reporter and anchor for WNBC-TV, anchors WCBS-TV's news programs "This Morning" and "News at Noon." Ashley Morrison worked for Bloomberg Television before joining "CBS MoneyWatch." The couple has a young son.

DETROIT Resveratrol, a substance found in red grapes and red wine, may have the potential to protect against hearing and cognitive decline, according to a published laboratory study from Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit.

The study shows that healthy rats are less likely to suffer the long-term effects of noise-induced hearing loss when given resveratrol before being exposed to loud noise for a long period of time.

"Our latest study focuses on resveratrol and its effect on bioinflammation, the body's response to injury and something that is believed to be the cause of many health problems including Alzheimer's disease, cancer, aging and hearing loss," says study lead author Michael D. Seidman, director of the Division of Otologic/Neurotologic Surgery in the Department of Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery at Henry Ford Hospital.

"Resveratrol is a very powerful chemical that seems to protect against the body's inflammatory process as it relates to aging, cognition and hearing loss."

The study is published online this week ahead of print in the journal Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery: http://oto.sagepub.com.

Hearing loss affects nearly one in five Americans. For most, hearing steadily declines with age. Noise-induced hearing loss, too, is a growing medical issue among American troops, with more than 12 percent returning home from Iraq and Afghanistan with significant hearing loss.

Noise-induced hearing loss not only impacts a person's ability to hear, it can cause difficulties with sleep and communication, and even raises the risk for heart disease by increasing a person's blood pressure, lipids and blood sugar.

Dr. Seidman and his colleagues have published multiple papers exploring noise-induced hearing loss, as well as the use of resveratrol, a grape constituent noted for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.

The latest study focuses the inflammatory process as it relates to aging, cognition and hearing loss.

It was designed to identify the potential protective mechanism of resveratrol following noise exposure by measuring its effect on cyclooxygenase-2 (or COX-2, key to the inflammatory process) protein expression and formation of reactive oxygen species, which plays an important role in cell signaling and homeostasis.

The study reveals that acoustic overstimulation causes a time-depended, up-regulation of COX-2 protein expression. And, resveratrol significantly reduces reactive oxygen species formation, inhibits COX-2 expression and reduces noise-induced hearing loss following noise exposure in rats.

"We've shown that by giving animals resveratrol, we can reduce the amount of hearing and cognitive decline," notes Dr. Seidman.

Ultimately, these findings suggest that resveratrol may exert a protective effect from noise-induced hearing loss by the inhibition of COX-2 expression and reactive oxygen species formation, although other mechanism may also be involved.

Rome Priests Respond With Sadness to Pope Stepping Down

S?bastien Bertrand/ Wikipedia

? S?bastien Bertrand/ Wikipedia

VATICAN??We?re sad because a Pope is not only a theoretical leader, he?s the man to whom you give your allegiance and your vows, so there?s a direct link and a sadness in that,? said Father Robert, after the Pope met Feb. 14 with the clergy of his diocese at Paul VI Hall.

?It?s very sad because we?re losing a wonderful shepherd and a wonderful theologian, but he is also being realistic about the other acts of governance that he has to do,? Father Robert told CNA.

The priest, who is originally from South Africa, also praised the Pope?s intellectual contributions, calling him ?a giant in the Church.?

In keeping with his academic gifts, Pope Benedict spent his final meeting with the priests of his diocese sharing his thoughts about participating in Vatican II and how he understands it.

?He?s been a man who has had a wonderful influence in terms of the need to understand our faith,? he said.

Another priest, Paulist Father Francesco Cupello, said he has supported Pope Benedict for 35 years.

?I love this Pope very much, because I was his supporter since 1978, during the conclave when John Paul I and John Paul II were elected,?

said Father Francesco of Rome?s Society of St. Paul.

?I was so happy when he was elected and very, very sad now,? he added.

The priest, who forms part of the order in charge of one of the world?s biggest Catholic publishing houses, said the Pope greatly influenced how he interprets the Second Vatican Council.

?I was very happy with his Summorum Pontificum and when he restored the ancient liturgy, because he had a lot of courage to do this,? he said.

Father Francesco said that this ?meant very much? and that it was ?a great gift to the whole Church.?

?It changed my life because I love ancient liturgy and now I celebrate it whenever I?ve the possibility,? he said.

A Tanzanian priest studying in Rome also said Pope Benedict has greatly influenced his priesthood and his life.

?His spiritual life has influenced me as a priest because he was a real father and indicated that you celebrate Mass with full attention, allowing people to participate fully in the liturgy and for them to recognize the coming of God in the consecration,? said Father Patrick Tibangayuka, who is studying for his PhD in philosophy.

?He has also influenced me in his spirit of listening,? said the African priest, who is originally from the Diocese of Bukoba.

?He would listen to everybody with an eye of respect and of reasoning and he would give clear answers, basing himself on the Church?s teachings, building himself on the Scripture and on tradition,? he added.

Father Tibangayuka said he was shocked when he heard about Pope Benedict?s resignation, but he thinks it was a ?courageous decision?

and ?has shown great humility.?

?

?Yesterday at the (general) audience

he said don?t be afraid because Jesus is there, so we are confident, and the other Pope who is coming will carry on the mission ? he will be a hard worker, a holy man and courageous as the Pope has been,? he said.

Catholic Changes: Breaking news from Rome! (or is it)

Around the world, 117 Catholic cardinals are preparing for a conclave to choose a new pope, a successor to Benedict XVI, whose resignation earlier this month was reported to have shocked the world?s 1 billion Catholics.

Well ? not really.

Most Catholics never see a pope ? except on television, in newspapers or on postage stamps. Most Catholics never read a word he writes. In fact, many Catholics don?t buy what he?s selling. But the news did open the door for some serious criticism of Catholicism and questions about why Catholics stick with it, despite all the church?s well-documented failings. (Catholic author Catherine Wolff just released an entire book about this question: Why do we stay?)

John Patrick Shanley, who wrote the Pulitzer Prize-winning play Doubt: A Parable, about intrigue between nuns and a priest in a New York City parish, spoke for many in a New York Times op/ed headlined ?Farewell to an Uninspiring Pope.? Shanley referred to the church?s hierarchy as ?a crowd of domineering fools.?

?I have watched the wealth of the Catholic Church turned into a subsidy for wrongdoing and a prop for the continuing campaign against women?s rights and homosexuality,? Shanley wrote. ?The men who make these decisions are at a remove, very much involved in protecting their power and comfort. I have little reason to hope that the Church of Rome will suddenly realize that without women, the Catholic Church is doomed, and should be doomed.?

Despite all the well-founded criticisms, and the revelations of great evils committed for decades by priests and bishops in this country and around the world, the numbers show the Catholic church is growing, both globally and in the United States as well. Catherine Wolff found 26 top Catholic writers who care enough about their faith that they each contributed profiles of Catholic heroes to her new book. Trouble in the church? Everyone, even Vatican insiders, seem to agree.

But, today, I want to hear what you think at this milestone.

So why does any sensible person remain Catholic?

Do you agree with John Patrick Shanley that the Catholic Church is doomed?

Stoneboat: Guest Blogger, Jennifer Morales: In Favor of the MFA

Today's guest blogger, Jennifer Morales, shares her thoughts on the benefits of an MFA program. Read on...

I?ve been thinking a lot lately about the value of my MFA in Creative Writing. I entered the Antioch University - Los Angeles low-residency program in 2009 already a good enough writer. I made my living in part as an editor and was a devoted student of spoken word and performance art. I was immersed daily in the practice of words. So why did I enroll? Searching for some document the other day, I stumbled across my personal admissions statement, part of my application packet for the two low-residency MFA programs to which I applied. The yearning for validation as a writer and for community are themes throughout the essay. Beyond developing my writing skills and the status the credential gives me in the teaching world, I wanted to know I was a real writer and I wanted to know I wasn?t alone.

Today, guest blogger Jennifer Morales shares her thoughts on the benefit she received from an MFA program. Read on...

The program at Antioch gave me both validation and community in spades. I?m sure there are a thousand pithy quotes out there on the internet about how one must decide one?s writer identity for oneself, that the only true validation comes from inside, and you become a writer the day you put pen to paper and say you are, and yadda yadda. Blah, blah, blah. Did I really need to go into perpetual student load debt to find that out? Apparently I did. It isn?t about the letters after my name. That?s not validation except in the most sterile, external, resume-reading sort of way. What truly validates me as a writer turns out to be the other thing I said I was seeking in that admissions essay: community. Spending 50 days, 10 days at a crack, with a hundred-some other students, at what we jokingly termed ?writers? camp,? was transformative. For someone who?s felt a bit of a freak all her life for geeking out on the sound of words or spinning out stories about every old lady at a bus stop, suddenly having a cohort of fellow word- freaks felt like an unexpected gift.? Even after graduation, my cohort keeps in touch, through visits, conferences, phone calls, letters, and social media. In my ongoing MFA community, I get to hear the struggles and terrors and joys of other writers I know and trust. I understand when they speak of their characters as if they were old friends, sometimes because their characters have become my friends as well. We champion each other and talk each other?s work up all over the country. We lust after words in a way that only devotees of Scrabble would understand. We read each other?s manuscripts and go to the oceans to throw angry rocks when we?re near each other?s oceans and need to throw rocks, because some editor or agent or contest judge or publisher just doesn?t get what we?re trying to say. But we get it. We get each other. My extended deferment on my student loans is going to end in July. I?m not looking forward to writing that check each month, but I will do so knowing that I got something priceless for my tuition fee.? Jennifer Morales is a multi-genre writer, editor, and performance artist inMilwaukee.?Her poem ?Pillow / Book? is forthcoming in pixel and sound at KenningJournal.com. Earlier poetry has been published in?Between the Heart and the Land/Entre el coraz?n y la tierra:?Latina?Poets in the?Midwest?and at Poetic Milwaukee. "Cross Reference," her poem about the?bombing ofHiroshima, won an honorable mention in the 2010 national War Poetry Contest. She serves as a board member for the Council for Wisconsin Writers. Canucks Hat Trick: Booth is back, no coach?s coin toss, Manny happy returns?

Three things to ponder following the Canucks? 4-3 shootout loss to the St. Louis Blues on Sunday:

1. BOOTH IS BACK: David Booth expects to play on a four-game road trip that opens Tuesday in Chicago after being medically cleared following a groin injury that sidelined the winger in a skating drill during training-camp testing Jan. 13. The prognosis for recovery was four to six weeks and although straight-line speed and agility haven?t been a problem for Booth in practises, sudden stops, turns and reaching were the final confidence hurdles that have been cleared.

?That?s hard because that?s the whole game,? said Booth, who?s at his best when he battles on the boards and takes a direct route to the net. ?Straight lines look good and everything but you?ve got to be able to play the game.

?Time has been the big thing and right now we?re at five weeks and it?s starting to feel real good. It?s tough because in a short season, it?s hard to get that game situation feel, but I hope to get that through a few practices and I?ll be good. My goal is to play sometime on the trip.?

Asked whether his offseason training regimen may have caused the injury ? it included customary skating and strength regimens but also treks up mountains and long hunting excursions ? Booth wasn?t sure what to make of it all. Dan Hamhuis was the only other Canuck to feel groin strain in testing but wasn?t sidelined. The defenceman chalked it up to new skates. As for Booth, who knows?

?There?s no doubt in my mind it wasn?t for a lack of training,? said Booth. ?Maybe I worked different muscle groups too much or based on speed, maybe I did too many squats. It?s all speculation as to why. I felt my conditioning and strength were as good as they?ve been in a long time and coming to camp in a short season, I thought guys (on other teams) would have trouble reading and reacting and my goal was to get off to a quick start.

?Those were tough days after it (injury) happened. I?ve never had any (groin) problems.?

2. COIN, WHAT COIN:? Alain Vigneault likes to flip his imaginary coin to determine goaltending starts, although the form chart of previous performances against a particular foe often comes into play. With the Canucks about to embark on a four-game road trip, here?s a little help for the coach. Roberto Luongo beat the Blackhawks in a shootout at Rogers Arena on Feb. 1 and had a win and shootout loss at the United Center last season. Give him the start Tuesday. Cory Schneider has put up some of his best performances in Dallas ? he came of age there and backstopped a 2-1 win at the American Airlines Arena last March? ? so play him in Big D on Thursday. Give Luongo the nod on Friday in Nashville and probably again in Detroit on Sunday. He backstopped a shootout in Joe Louis Arena nearly a year ago.

St. Louis Blues coach Ken Hitchcock was asked when he has a healthy tandem of Jaroslav Halak and Brian Elliott, what?s the rationale to choose between Halak, who had 46 starts last season, and Elliott, who had 36.

?It was easy,? said Hitchcock. ?Both guys wanted the net and there was an internal competition and it was healthy for us. One stumble and the other gets the net. As soon we saw a flaw or if the guy was tired, the other guy got in. And if you?re worried about it, at the end of the year you?re not going to perform when it matters anyway.?

3. MANNY HAPPY RETURNS: Is it just me, or does the Manny Malhotra situation seem strange? Placed on injury reserve for rest of the season and not a playoff option in case of injury, according to general manager Mike Gillis, the centre was skating the extras Sunday morning. There?s no doubt the pending unrestricted free agent would like to play somewhere next season, but the better bet is that he?ll stay in the organization in a player development capacity. Great at faceoffs and good in the room, he would be a real asset to young players. But that?s next season. What should we make of Sunday?s skate?

?He?s still a part of our team,? said coach Alain Vigneault. ?We want him to be around the players. We want him to continue to have that solid impact that he has with our group. Any time he wants to step on the ice and skate with our guys, he?s more than welcome.?

Kotoko wallop Sony Nguema 7-0 in CAF Champions League

Asante Kotoko eased to a comfortable 7-0 win over Sony Ela Nguema at the Baba Yara Stadium in the CAF Champions League preliminary round first leg qualifier.

The win at the Baba Yara Stadium, gives the Porcupine Warriors a comfortable lead, going into the return leg of the preliminary round fixture as they return to the competition after four seasons

A brace from striker Kofi Nti Boakye, Abdul Aziz Yusif, Michael Anaba, Richard Mpong, Siedu Bancey and Joseph Ochaya puts Kotoko in the driving seat.

And the result is Kotoko's biggest in the competition since it was christened, the Champions League and in all competitive matches under coach Mas-Ud Didi Dramani.

Nti Boakye opened the scoring for Kotoko, thirteen minutes into the start of the match before Yusif doubled their lead after 29 minutes.

Kotoko finished the first half 4-nil up with midfielder Anaba and Nti Boakye scoring the third and fourth goals.

Back from the break, Kotoko had to wait until the 70th minute before they scored their fifth goal through Mpong.

Substitute Bancey after a flurry of misses finally found the back of the net. Then in the 89th minute, Ochaya put the gloss to the finish when he slotted home the seventh goal.

Kotoko will meet either JSM Bejaia of Algeria or Niger?s FC Olympic de Niamey in the next round if they advance from the return leg next month in Malabo.
