Italy claims Google failed to declare millions

MILAN (AP) ? Google says it has been working with Italian authorities on an audit of the tax it pays in the country, after financial police determined the Internet giant had undeclared earnings of ?240 million ($311 million) from 2002-2006

Google issued a statement Thursday, the day after an Italian Treasury official announced the police findings. In addition, Vieri Ceriani said the company had not paid value added tax of ?96 million in the period.

Italy joins France, Germany and Britain in scrutinizing Google's tax practices.

Google insists it complies with tax laws in countries where it operates and that audits are common. It added that Italian authorities to date have not demanded additional tax.

Google's European operations are based in Ireland, where the company contracts out its services and pays corporation tax.

What's Past is Prologue: a look inside the future of Lockheed Martin

DNP What's Past is Prologue A Look Inside the Future of Lockheed Martin

I receive a terse invite from Lockheed Martin that asks me to take a "glimpse into the future," but it doesn't mention whose future it is. I could write about what I know of the American defense contractor on the back of a postage stamp, but a cursory Google search fills in some of the blanks. The company reportedly receives around 7 percent of the US military budget on its own - and with that, my imagination runs rampant about what I'm likely to see. Dreaming of playing with laser pistols, intelligent cyborgs and giant robots, I tell them I'm coming.

A few days later, I turn up at the Honourable Artillery Company in London's glitzy financial district, a miniature castle that's dwarfed by the gleaming skyscrapers that surround it. In a way, the landscape is telling, since the occupants of those buildings can shoulder some of the blame for the current financial crisis - while across the street, Lockheed Martin is preparing its cost-cutting response.

Two hulking vehicles guard the entrance off a small courtyard, and through a window I see a plush room full of red velvet and leather, stuffed with computers and pensive, well-dressed operators. I wonder if I'm being vetted as I amble inside, my now-sodden socks and matted hair marking me out as unthreatening -- just as long as I promise not to get out my camera. As I'm ushered inside and the tour begins, I'm expecting to see jetpacks and robots, but the reality is much different. Not even this industry is immune to the world's financial problems, and my tour would reveal that its future lies decidedly in our past.

?Campaign To Remember Our Benghazi Heroes? Is Launched By Heroes Group With Massive National Media Campaign To Remember, Honor & Illuminate Our Four Benghazi Heroes

The Foundation to Illuminate America?s Heroes has launched ?The Campaign To Remember Our Benghazi Heroes? - To Remember, Honor & Illuminate Our Four Heroes of Benghazi who heroically lost their lives in the terrorist attack on our Consulate in Benghazi, Libya on September 11, 2012. A massive media campaign featuring these four heroes is being launched to ensure that they are not forgotten.

McLean, VA (PRWEB) November 29, 2012

David C. Jamison, founding board member and executive director of the Foundation to Illuminate America?s Heroes, announced today, ?The Foundation is launching ?The Campaign to Remember Our Heroes of Benghazi? with a massive national media campaign to feature the pictures and stories of our four Benghazi heroes, Ambassador J. Christopher Stevens; Consulate Info Officer, Sean Smith; and Navy SEALS, Tyrone Woods and Glen Doherty. The Foundation?s campaign headed up by Rick Reed, who co-produced the 2004 'Swift Boat and POW's for Truth', is designed to insure that these heroes of the Benghazi attack are not forgotten."

"Our memories of them, who they were, what they heroically did and how important they are to us and our country will be kept alive through this massive national media campaign, using radio and television spots, interviews, articles in popular magazines and documentaries," Jamison said. "This massive media campaign, which is now a project of the Foundation, was launched by a former special ops pilot, Nolan W. Peterson, now a journalist, along with other patriotic and concerned Americans who are frustrated by the lack of transparency surrounding the events of 9/11/12.?

Nolan W. Peterson, a former special ops pilot and a veteran of Afghanistan and Iraq, who is now a journalist covering national security issues launched the campaign, which is now a project of the Foundation to Illuminate America?s Heroes. The website he created for this Benghazi Heroes Campaign is at http://www.benghaziheroescampaign.com. Peterson has been named to the International Board of Advisors to the Foundation to direct this campaign. He is joined by founding Board members of the Foundation, David Jamison and William Ciosek and Advisory Board Member, Rick Reed. Ciosek researched the story of Merian C. Cooper, the Foundation?s first American hero creator of and the famed Kosciuszko Squadron for over 15 years and who has written the film treatment entitled ?Honor to You? which is available on the Foundation?s website.

?Our mission is not about politics?, Peterson stated, ?We want to honor the memories of these four heroes. Their acts of bravery have all but been covered up by political spin and intrigue. We want to tell the whole world the truth about who they are and what they did that fateful night to make sure that their story is not forgotten. This campaign was launched by a group of concerned patriotic citizens who are frustrated by the lack of transparency surrounding the events of 9/11/12. These heroes deserve better than that!?

The campaign to Remember Our Benghazi Heroes is headed up by renowned media creator and producer, Rick Reed, a member of the Foundation to Illuminate America?s Heroes International Advisory Board. Rick Reed co-produced the television ads for the famously successful ?Swift Boat Veterans and POW?s for Truth? media campaign in the Bush-Kerry 2004 Presidential race. Reed is laying out an aggressive media campaign to be launched with television spots, interviews with Nolan Peterson who created the campaign, now a project of the Foundation at http://www.benghaziheroescampaign.com, short documentaries, social media, etc.

?We want to tell the stories of these heroes, utilizing all of the media avenues available to us?, Reed said, ?Our efforts to tell the world what these four heroes did on that fateful night will only be limited by the amount of donations to the Foundation for this project.?

The Foundation is offering the opportunity to all patriotic American donors to participate in illuminating the inspiring story of these four American heroes through the tax-deductible, charitable Foundation which will enable their heroic story to be told to America and the world.

All patriotic Americans are urged to visit the Foundation?s website at http://www.illuminateamericasheroes.com ; to donate generously to this ?Campaign To Remember Our Benghazi Heroes?

The Foundation is making a personal appeal to all patriotic Americans to virally spread the word of this this national ?Campaign To Remember Our Benghazi Heroes?--To Remember, Honor & Illuminate Our Four Heroes of Benghazi who heroically lost their lives in the terrorist attack on our Consulate in Benghazi, Libya on September 11, 2012. at http://www.benghaziheroescampaign.com, through all social media; sharing a link to this press release with their best contacts and members of the media they know; and to email links to their Twitter accounts and on their Facebook pages.

Amazon takes Maps API out of beta, cautiously steps out of Google's shadow

If Amazon has its way, Google Maps on your Kindle Fire won't be the default option for much longer. Back in September, the online retail giant introduced a beta version of its Amazon Maps API to see if it could go the Apple route by fleshing out its own maps platform. Now it's ready to take the API out of beta after several months of testing and a lot of developer interest -- Hipmunk, Evernote, Trulia and Zillow have already integrated it into their Kindle Fire apps. The API currently features interactive maps and customized overlays, and is now a part of the Amazon Mobile App SDK. It's early days yet for the mapping service and we're sure it doesn't have the bells and whistles of the one from Mountain View, but this does mean a further step toward differentiation from the Big Goog. Let's just hope this turns out better than iOS6 Maps and no one comes to regret it.

Big winners share lessons, risks of Powerball win

COLUMBIA, Mo. (AP) ? So you just won the $500 million Powerball jackpot, the second highest in lottery history. Now what?

Perhaps it's time for a tropical vacation or a new car. There are bills to pay, loans to settle, debts to square.

Past winners of mega-lottery drawings and financial planners have some more sound advice: Stick to a budget, invest wisely, learn to say no and be prepared to lose friends while riding an emotional roller-coaster of joy, anxiety, guilt and distrust.

"I had to adapt to this new life, "said Sandra Hayes, 52, a former child services social worker who split a $224 million Powerball jackpot with a dozen co-workers in 2006, collecting a lump sum she said was in excess of $6 million after taxes. "I had to endure the greed and the need that people have, trying to get you to release your money to them. That caused a lot of emotional pain. These are people who you've loved deep down, and they're turning into vampires trying to suck the life out of me."

The single mother kept her job with the state of Missouri for another month and immediately used her winnings to pay off an estimated $100,000 in student loans and a $70,000 mortgage. She spent a week in Hawaii and bought a new Lexus, but six years later still shops at discount stores and lives on a fixed income ? albeit, at a higher monthly allowance than when she brought home paychecks of less than $500 a week.

"I know a lot of people who won the lottery and are broke today," she said. "If you're not disciplined, you will go broke. I don't care how much money you have."

Lottery agencies are keen to show off beaming prize-winners hugging oversize checks at celebratory news conferences, but the tales of big lottery winners who wind up in financial ruin, despair or both are increasingly common.

There's the two-time New Jersey lottery winner who squandered her $5.4 million fortune. A West Virginia man who won $315 million a decade ago on Christmas later said the windfall was to blame for his granddaughter's fatal drug overdose, his divorce, hundreds of lawsuits and an absence of true friends.

The National Endowment for Financial Education cautions those who receive a financial windfall ? whether from lottery winnings, divorce settlements, cashed-out stock options or family inheritances ? to plan for their psychological needs as well as their financial strategies. The Denver-based nonprofit estimates that as many as 70 percent of people who land sudden windfalls lose that money within several years.

"Being able to manage your emotions before you do anything sudden is one of the biggest things," said endowment spokesman Paul Golden. "If you've never had the comfort of financial security before, if you were really eking out a living from paycheck to paycheck, if you've never managed money before, it can be really confusing. There's this false belief that no matter what you do, you're never going to worry about money again."

David Gehle, who spent 20 years at a Nebraska meatpacking plant before he and seven ConAgra Foods co-workers won a $365 million Powerball jackpot in 2006, used some of his winnings to visit Australia, New Guinea and Vietnam. He left ConAgra three weeks after he won, and now spends his time woodworking and playing racquetball, tennis and golf.

But most of his winnings are invested, and the 59-year-old still lives in his native Lincoln. He waited for several years before buying a $450,000 home in a tidy neighborhood on the southern edge of town.

"My roots are in Nebraska, and I'm not all that much different now than I was before," Gehle said. "I'm pretty normal. I never was the kind of guy who went for big, expensive cars or anything like that. I just want something that runs."

In the first year after he won, Michael Terpstra would awaken many nights in a panic. Had he slept in? Was he late to work the night shift?

"At times I'd wake up and this would all seem like a dream," the 54-year-old said. "I'd have to walk around the house and tell myself, I did win. I'm not working anymore, and I do live here. I didn't get drunk, break into someone's house and go to sleep. This is where I'm supposed to be."

His new home is a roomy, two-story house in south Lincoln with a big-screen television and paintings of Jesus on the walls. He no longer uses alarm clocks and spends his days taking his 92-pound black lab, Rocco, on walks.

He was terrified when he first won, convinced that he would lose all of the money and have to return to work. So he lives carefully off the interest from conservative investments, with help from accountants and lawyers. He bought the new house and a truck, but struggles to name any extravagant purchases.

"I can't buy a super yacht. I can't buy a Gulfstream," he said. "Then again, I don't think I'd use either one, so why would I buy one?"

That said, some mega-winners still can't resist the lure of big jackpots, at least not the two-buck chances. On Tuesday, former ConAgra worker Dung Tran, a Vietnamese immigrant, walked into the same Lincoln U-Stop where he purchased the winning ticket six years ago and bought 22 more from the very employee who sold him the first prize-winner, said cashier Janice Mitzner.

"We joked about it," she said. "I told him, 'Wouldn't it be something if you won again?'"

Hayes is also hoping to strike rich again ? she bought 10 tickets at a Dirt Cheap liquor store on her way home Tuesday while speaking with an Associated Press reporter. Unlike many big winners, she has kept a visible public profile instead of going underground, appearing on a 2007 reality TV show ("Million Dollar Christmas"), writing an online Life After the Lottery blog and self-publishing a short book, "How Winning the Lottery Changed My Life."

"We have this drawing tomorrow, and if somebody wins, God bless them," she said. "They're going to need those blessings."

Sieve holds nanoparticles and acts as solar absorber

ScienceDaily (Nov. 26, 2012) ? A membrane consisting of polymer fibres and proteins makes a novel filter for tiny, nano-scaled particles in aqueous solutions. The result of this research, which was done by Professor Mady Elbahri and his team from the Institute of Material Science at Kiel University (KU) and the Institute of Polymer Research at Helmholtz-Zentrum Geesthacht (HZG), has recently been published as the cover article in the current issue of Advanced Functional Materials.

A nanofluid, which means a colloidal suspension of e.g. metal nanoparticles in water, passes easily through commonly used macroporous polymeric membranes. The particles are too small to be held using hole diameters between three and four micrometers. In addition, the particles would block smaller sieve openings rapidly. Hence, pressure would be necessary to filter out the fluid.

In order to solve these problems, Elbahri and his team biofunctionalized their membrane and added a commercially available protein to the fibres. "We found out that the protein undergoes a conformational change under water, and its ability to capture all the metal nanoparticles during the filtration process is activated," explains Elbahri. "This is a breakthrough," adds Co-author Dr. Shahin Homaeigohar. "The same principle will hopefully enable us, to filter biomolecules and organisms out of waste water."

From Filtration to solar thermal energy

When the nano sieve captures metal particles such as gold, another application is at hand, because, no other method has succeeded in dispersing the particles that well. "This result was unexpected," says Elbahri. "Under dry conditions, the membrane shows the color of the metal, in this case the red of the gold nanoparticles." When the membrane gets wet, it becomes black. "Then, it acts as an omnidirectional perfect black absorber, which can be used as a solar absorber." Elbahri adds: "Indeed we bridge the gaps between several disciplines, chemistry, physics, bioscience and materials science that is, and the Nanochemistry and Nanoengineering group has now initiated the first step toward intradisciplinarity of Nanoscience."

Application as a virus and bio-filter

The nano sieve will allow filtering very small particles or biomolecules and organisms such as viruses out of water. The scientists involved have already patented their innovation, a bio-nano-composite, in Europe. Another patent for the USA is . Besides its application in water filtration, the nano sieve shows great potentials as solar absorber and as a catalyser. "All in all, the result is a breakthrough towards the design of an operative filtration process, as a new route for the fabrication of functional materials, and offers commercially attractive efficiencies at a low cost," says Elbahri.

2014 Ford Fiesta gets MyFord Touch with a bigger screen, simpler Sync voice commands

For all of Ford's emphasis on Sync, it's hard to deny that Fiesta drivers usually sit on the bottom rung of the automaker's technology ladder when they're denied MyFord Touch and the related perks of larger vehicles. Pick up the keys to a higher-spec 2014 Fiesta, however, and you'll be in for a treat. The compact will stuff a 6.5-inch touchscreen and MyFord Touch into the center stack, with a few software upgrades over what we've already seen in cars like the Focus and Fusion. The highlight is undoubtedly the more direct voice command system -- the Nuance-driven recognition no longer demands that we specify music categories or radio formats to start playing tunes. Bluetooth smartphone pairing and navigation by address should be streamlined at the same time. Motorists will have to wait until 2013 to reap the rewards, but it could be worth the wait to drive away with Ford's better electronics in an affordable ride.

Bigfoot part human, DNA report claims

Genetic testing confirms the legendary Bigfoot is a human relative that arose some 15,000 years ago ? at least according to a press release issued by a company called DNA Diagnostics detailing supposed work by a Texas veterinarian.

The report from Melba S. Ketchum also suggests such cryptids had sex with modern human females that resulted in hairy hominin hybrids, but the scientific community is dubious about her claim.

"A team of scientists can verify that their five-year-long DNA study, currently under peer-review, confirms the existence of a novel hominin hybrid species, commonly called 'Bigfoot' or 'Sasquatch,' living in North America," the release reads. "Researchers' extensive DNA sequencing suggests that the legendary Sasquatch is a human relative that arose approximately 15,000 years ago."

For her study, Ketchum obtained three "whole nuclear genomes from purported Sasquatch samples. The genome sequencing shows that Sasquatch mtDNA is identical to modern Homo sapiens, but Sasquatch nuDNA is a novel, unknown hominin related to Homo sapiens and other primate species." (Mitochondrial DNA, or mtDNA, is the DNA that resides in the cell's energy-producing structures, and is typically passed down from mothers, while nuclear DNA, nuDNA, resides in the cells' nuclei and is passed down from both parents to offspring.)

"Our data indicate that the North American Sasquatch is a hybrid species, the result of males of an unknown hominin species crossing with female Homo sapiens," the statement reads. [ Infographic: Tracking Belief in Bigfoot ]

    Any proof?
    It's a fascinating theory.

So where's the evidence? Well, there is none. Not yet, anyway: Ketchum's research has not appeared in any peer-reviewed scientific journal, and there's no indication when that might happen. If the data are good and the science is sound, any reputable science journal would jump at the chance to be the first to publish this groundbreaking information. Until then, Ketchum has refused to let anyone else see her evidence.

Of course the history of Bigfoot is rife with exaggerated and premature claims about proof of the creature's existence. For decades, various types of evidence have been offered as final, definitive proof, ranging from Bigfoot hair to blood to dead bodies. Without exception, the evidence has always been a hoax, misidentification or inconclusive.

Because Ketchum has released no information at all about her findings (nor have they been examined by outside experts), it's impossible to evaluate the validity of her conclusions. But an important clue can be found in her statement that "Sasquatch mtDNA is identical to modern Homo sapiens."

If the mitochontrial DNA is identical to Homo sapiens (i.e., modern humans), then this suggests one of two options. The first, endorsed by Ketchum, is that Bigfoot ancestors had sex with women about 15,000 years ago and created a half-human hybrid species currently hiding across North America. [ Rumor or Reality: The Creatures of Cryptozoology ]

There is, however, another, simpler interpretation of such results: The samples were contaminated. Whatever the sample originally was ? Bigfoot, bear, human or something else ? it's possible that the people who collected and handled the specimens accidentally introduced their DNA into the sample, which can easily occur with something as innocent as a spit, sneeze or cough. No one outside of Ketchum's team knows how this alleged Bigfoot DNA was collected, from where or by whom. It could have been collected by the world's top forensics experts, or by a pair of amateur Bigfoot buffs with no evidence-gathering training.

    1. Science news from NBCNews.com

      1. Scientists are skeptical about Bigfoot DNA report

Genetic testing confirms the legendary Bigfoot is a human relative that arose some 15,000 years ago ? at least according to a press release issued by a company called DNA Diagnostics detailing supposed work by a Texas veterinarian.

      4. Atom smasher creates new kind of matter

    Confirming it's Bigfoot
How did the team definitively determine that the samples were from a Bigfoot? Did they take a blood or saliva sample from a living Bigfoot ? If so, how did they get that close, and why didn't they simply capture it or photograph it? If the samples were found in the wild, how do they know it wasn't left by another animal ? or possibly even a hunter, hiker or camper who left human genetic material?

Previous alleged Bigfoot samples subjected to DNA analysis have been deemed "unknown" or "unidentified." However, "unknown" or "unidentified" results do not mean "Bigfoot." There are many reasons why a DNA sample might come back unknown, including that it was contaminated or too degraded by environmental conditions. Or it could simply mean that the animal it came from was not among the reference samples that the laboratory used for comparison. There is no reference sample of Bigfoot DNA to compare it with, so by definition, there cannot be a conclusive match.

Ketchum also issued a statement requesting that the U.S. government immediately recognize Bigfoot as "an indigenous people and immediately protect their human and Constitutional rights against those who would see in their physical and cultural differences a 'license' to hunt, trap, or kill them." Since no Bigfoot has ever been hunted, trapped or killed, it's not clear that the creatures ? if they exist ? require any special federal protection.

Ketchum's is not the only genetics-based project intended to find Bigfoot. Earlier this year, researchers from Oxford University and the Lausanne Museum of Zoology announced they were collecting samples of alleged Bigfoot and Yeti hair for genetic identification. Oxford geneticist Bryan Sykes collected materials from the public from May through September, and is currently conducting DNA analysis. Once the results are in, he plans to submit his results to a peer-reviewed scientific journal.

If Ketchum has the definitive proof she claims, the world will soon know about it, and Bigfoot will be proven once and for all. On the other hand, if the evidence never appears, or is inconclusive and flawed, the search will continue.

Italy votes in center-left primary amid recession

ROME (AP) ? Italians voted Sunday in a primary for a center-left candidate to run in spring general elections that will in large part determine how Italy's tries to fix its troubled finances and emerge from a grinding recession.

If none of the five candidates wins a majority, a runoff will be held next Sunday. The race is expected to come down to a faceoff between Pier Luigi Bersani, the 61-year-old leader of the main center-left Democratic Party, and challenger Matteo Renzi, the 37-year-old mayor of Florence.

While the candidates have been gamely campaigning and debating one another ahead of the primary, Sunday's vote has largely been overshadowed by speculation about the political ambitions of Italy's current premier, Mario Monti, and whether ex-Premier Silvio Berlusconi will run for office for a fourth term.

Berlusconi again threw a wrench in the primary plans of his center-right People of Freedom party by hinting Saturday that he was "thinking" about returning to politics. Berlusconi has flip-flopped several times on the question in recent weeks, complicating efforts by his party secretary, Angelino Alfano, to rally support behind a party that has been tainted by a series of political finance scandals in recent months.

"If Berlusconi really does return to the field as he has said, I have to ask myself what's the point of having a primary, which only has sense if he doesn't run," Italian news reports quoted Alfano as saying Saturday. "Otherwise we have to rethink everything."

Berlusconi resigned as premier last year amid personal sex scandals and legal woes, unable to convince international markets that he could balance Italy's budget and pass necessary financial reforms to save Italy from a Greek-style debt crisis. Italy's president tapped Monti, a respected economist and former European commissioner, to head a government of technocrats to guide Italy until general elections.

Monti's government has imposed a painful austerity program and pushed through structural reforms that together have succeeded in bringing down Italy's borrowing costs. While ordinary Italians have chafed at the reforms, the positive market reaction to Monti's stewardship has fueled support for a second term, particularly among centrist politicians and some of Italy's business elite.

Monti has ruled out running for premier but has left the door open for a second term if no party wins a clear majority and he is tapped to head another government.

President Giorgio Napolitano made clear last week that Monti couldn't run for office heading a party ticket, since he's currently a senator-for-life. Newspaper analysts suggested Napolitano's aim in keeping Monti out of the campaign, on a potentially unelectable centrist ticket, was to ensure he remained a viable alternative for premier if neither of Italy's main parties wins a clear majority ? or to be named his successor as president.

Garrison claims second consecutive singles racquetball trophy ...

Robert Moore, 795th MP Bn., right, hits the ball back to his Garrison Command opponent, Anthony Powers, on Court 3 in the championship round of the Commanders Cup Singles Racquetball Tournament Nov. 8 at DFC.

Garrison Command successfully defended its title as the post?s reigning racquetball champions, earning their second consecutive Commander?s Cup Singles Racquetball Tournament trophy Nov. 8 at Davidson Fitness Center.
The Garrison team of Anthony Powers, Dave Faulkner and Renard Ellis overwhelmed the competition from their first game in the second round of the four-day tourney (they earned a bye in Round 1), allowing no more than nine points from any opponent in games played to 15.

?It?s just looking for different styles, trying to play your game and not deviating too much from your game plan,? Powers said. ?There are always new players coming on, so you never know what to expect when you walk in there. You have to give your best and scope out the competition as you get close to the final to see what their strengths and weaknesses are, just like they are (doing to) you.?

    Image

From left, Garrison Command player Renard Ellis is congratulated by Danny Howell, FMWR sports specialist, as his teammates Anthony Powers and Dave Faulkner look on.

The 795th Military Police Battalion team of Robert Moore, Aaron Poulin and Mike Lynch were the tournament runners-up, fighting their way past the 169th Engineer Battalion, the two-time runners-up Dental Activity team and the 35th Engineer Battalion to advance to the final.

?We took second ? that?s not too bad,? Poulin said to his teammates as the tournament drew to a close.

In the championship round, Ellis was the first Garrison player to emerge victorious, exiting Court 3 with a 15-9, 15-2 win over Lynch. Faulkner assured Garrison would take home the trophy win with a 15-2, 15-5 win over Poulin on Court 2. Powers then gave his team the sweep, defeating Moore, 15-1, 15-2.

The 92nd Military Police Battalion team of Jim ?Doc? Blair, Damien Bangle and Brian Moreno finished third in the tournament, defeating the 35th Engr. Bn. in the third-place round.

?We had a good solid team. We came in without a lot of practice or a lot of notice, but we were able to pull some wins out,? Blair said.

Blair expressed the players? appreciation for the quality of the tournament and the sports programs hosted by Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation.

?This year?s tournament was great. (FMWR sports specialist) Danny (Howell) and the gang always put on a good show for us,? Blair said.

Bangle said the tournament represented not only a chance to represent his unit, but also an opportunity to meet other players.

?A lot of these guys, you might not have even bumped into before the tournament, but I?ve had a chance to make a couple of friends here ? the guy I just played, we?ll probably play each other again, just because we know it?s a challenge,? Bangle said.

Powers and Faulkner, who were also last year?s doubles racquetball champs, play on a regular basis at DFC. Powers said he hopes to bring more players to the courts.

?One thing I wanted to do this year more than any other is to try and be an ambassador for the sport and try to get more new players interested in racquetball,? Powers said. ?You don?t want to wait an entire year between Commander?s Cup tournaments to play. So, I hope we?ll see some new faces and be able to get new players some more experience.?

?This game is a blast. The rules are simple to learn, but it will take you years to master ? there?s always a new complexity or wrinkle to unravel,? he added.

Tibetan man sets self on fire in protest in China

BEIJING (AP) ? A Tibetan herdsman has died after setting himself on fire in northwest China's Qinghai province, state media reported Saturday, in the latest in a series of protests against Chinese rule.

The official Xinhua News Agency says Dazheng, 27, self-immolated in Zekog county on Friday night but provides no further details about why the man set himself ablaze.

The death came one day after Libong Tsering, 19, self-immolated in Tongren county in the same province on Thursday, according to an earlier Xinhua report. Both Tongren and Zekog are located within the Huangnan prefecture. A government worker from Huangnan prefecture, which oversees the counties, said on Saturday he had no information on the deaths and refused to identify himself, which is common among officials in Tibetan regions when the topic involves self-immolations.

The self-proclaimed Tibetan government-in-exile based in India has confirmed Libong Tsering's death and reported another self-immolation in Gansu province on Thursday night by Tadin Kyab, a 23-year-old former monk.

On Tuesday, Xinhua reported two Tibetan herdsmen killed themselves by setting themselves on fire in two separate incidents.

The latest deaths bring to about 80 the number of Tibetans who have self-immolated since 2009 in protest against what overseas supporters say is China's strict control over Tibet's Buddhist culture and a suffocating security presence in Tibetan regions.

Most of the protesters have doused themselves with gasoline and set themselves alight after shouting slogans calling for Tibetan independence and blessings for the Dalai Lama, Tibet's exiled Buddhist leader. China blames him for encouraging the wave of self-immolations that Beijing has apparently been powerless to stop despite stepped-up security and an extensive spying network.

The self-proclaimed Tibetan government-in-exile on Friday repeated a call for China to reassess its policies toward Tibetans.

"The Central Tibetan Administration urges the Chinese government to address the underlying grievances of the Tibetan people, instead of imposing counter-productive measures targeting the families and relatives of the self-immolators," it said in a statement, using the formal name of the body headquartered in the northern Indian town of Dharamsala.

Mobile Wireless Communications And The Advances In The Field

Wireless communication is, as the name suggests, communication between devices which are not physically connected with the help of wires. Such things like cell phones, remotes for toy cars and TVs, PDAs, radio devices and walkie-talkies can all be put in this category. The most recent use that wireless communication technology has been put to is the variety of wireless headphones, keyboards and even your mouse for computers, and also the GPS tracking in your car which tells you the best route to your destination. The main piece of equipment that everyone typically thinks of when they hear ?wireless communications? is a cell phone or mobile wireless communications.

    ?

Martin Cooper is considered to be the father of mobile wireless communications. He succeeded in making the first call from a wireless telecommunications device in 1973. The cell phone has seen a lot of change and evolution since then. Unlike the cell phones today that are adept for so many things the cell phones then were only able to make and receive phone calls. They can not only make and receive calls, but also has a host of very advanced features such as internet connectivity, thanks to the Wireless Application Protocol or WAP and other such technologies. In contrast with the talk time on the phones back then, which was 35 minutes, our phones now can handle over 30 hours; that is a big change.

    ?

Early cell phones, or as we can call them the first generation or 1G cell phones, used to depend on the analog TDMA or Time-Division Multiple Access technology alone for communication; then came the 2G or second generation of mobile phones, which depended on the CDMA and the GSM technologies. This enabled the 2G phones to transmit not only the analog voice signals, but also the digital data signals. This revolutionized the whole idea of mobile wireless communications, as the PDAs and GPRS and WAP came into the picture. Phones today are able to be more portable as they are smaller in size. Also, as the carriers were now able to guarantee non-interference of signals over an area even with increased subscribers, mobile usage increased dramatically.

    ?

Now we are in the third and fourth generation of mobile communications, more commonly known as 3G and 4G. These would provide features like WLAN and WiMAX which would enable all the future devices to have exclusive IP addresses. Mobile wireless communications has really evolved since Martin Cooper brought us into the future with his mobile telephone.

Oil prices ease as Gaza truce holds

(AP) ? Oil prices extended their falls Friday as a cease-fire agreement between Israel and the militant Hamas group that stopped weeklong fighting in the Gaza Strip continued to hold.

Benchmark crude for January delivery was down 28 cents to $87.10 per barrel at midday in London in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract rose 63 cents to finish at $87.38 per barrel Wednesday. Markets were closed Thursday for the U.S. Thanksgiving holiday.

Israel launched an offensive on Nov. 14 to halt rocket fire from Gaza, unleashing some 1,500 airstrikes on Hamas-linked targets, while Hamas and other Gaza militants showered Israel with just as many rockets. A truce reached Wednesday was still intact, easing fears of an escalating war that could spill beyond Gaza and eventually disrupt oil supplies.

"I think it's a bit of reaction to the cease-fire in the Middle East, said Ric Spooner, chief market analyst at CMC Markets in Sydney.

Brent crude, used to price international varieties of oil, fell 33 cents to $110.53 a barrel in London.

In other energy futures trading in New York:

? Heating oil fell 2 cents to $3.06 a gallon.

? Wholesale gasoline rose 4 cents to $2.75 a gallon.

? Natural gas was steady to $4.02 per 1,000 cubic feet.

gramesmith70: Daily Tips for Business: Workplace Communication ...

Well, as an entrepreneur I used to laugh at people who wanted to come to work for my company and on their resume they put that they had a Business Communications Degree. I used to think that they studied business communications because it was an easy subject in school, one that you could learn without having to deal with too much math, perhaps even taking the easy way out. Nevertheless workplace communication is an essential tool, and without it your business will not operate efficiently, and you are bound to get your wires crossed more often than not.

Mind, Body & Spirit: The Holy Triumvirate of NeuroModulation ...

There was a time not all that long ago when people ? and the cultures in which they thrived ? fully realized the interconnectedness of all things in their daily lives. This applied not only to nature and community, but to individuals themselves, who understood they are made up of many interlacing parts.

If one of those parts is sick and not working properly, the others are affected. Almost like a butterfly effect for the human body. But somehow this innate wisdom eroded over the years, especially in western medicine, and it?s manifesting in a society that is unwell.

    To put it mildly.

While it?s often too daunting to confront the larger issues facing our planet, we can at least look a little closer to home ? at ourselves. People these days are a mess, with physical ailments, emotional trauma, and spiritual roadblocks. We treat one component of a tripod that?s in disarray, often to the detriment of the others.

And that?s where NeuroModulation Technique (NMT) comes in. But what exactly is it?

?Want to understand NMT?? asks Gail Smithson, L.Ac., of the Smithson Clinic, laughing. ?How comprehensive is your understanding of the universe and consensual reality? ?Cause that?s what it?s about. It?s based on the notion of non-duality.?

    Translation please.

?NMT works with the body?s innate ability to heal,? he explains. ?Your body has infinite intelligence, and NMT basically activates that intelligence through muscle testing and response.?

In essence, your body knows better than you do. It realizes that if one area is out of synch, often all areas are out of synch.

This particular system of health care was developed by Dr. Leslie S. Feinberg of Oregon, a result of many years studying numerous methods of energetic medicine. It?s rooted in these methods, and intertwined with accepted principles of western science ? neurophysiology, physiology, psychology ? and traditional Chinese medicine concepts. Feinberg basically postulates that illness is caused by confusion in the body?s internal control center, the Autonomic Control System (ACS), which makes it nearly impossible to regulate the body to a healthy state.

This confusion can be caused by allergies, toxic agents, errors in sensitivity settings, environmental chemicals and pernicious synaptic patterns (PSPs). ?What NM T attempts to do is correct the confusion, calm the system, by reintegrating all parts of what make up a human being, including mind, body and spirit.

This is done through muscle response testing and verbal or non-verbal semantic questions and statements. The process is often further augmented with gentle stimulation of vertebral segments, specific breathing patterns and other sensory stimuli.

It?s a whole-body treatment system, and Smithson says that just about all conditions can be helped by NMT.

    Let the healing begin.

    Mushroom Poisoning Claims 3rd Victim

Another person has died from accidental mushroom poisoning at a California senior care facility, bringing the total death toll to three.

The third victim, whose name, age and gender have not been released, died on Saturday, according to the Associated Press.

The first two elderly women died after a caregiver at their senior care facility inadvertently served them a meal with poisonous mushrooms picked on the Loomis, Calif., property. The caregiver and three other residents of Gold Age Villa were hospitalized, according to WTEN-TV, the ABC News affiliate in Sacramento.

Teresa Olesniewicz, 73, died Friday morning, and Barbara Lopes, 86 died Friday night, according to the county coroner.

"It looks like a tragic accident," said Lt. Mark Reed of the Placer County Sheriff's Department.

Reed told the Sacramento Bee that the caregiver "just didn't know" the mushrooms were poisonous. It is not clear what kind of mushroom the victims ate, however.

Woman Allegedly Poisons Boyfriend's Water with Visine Watch Video Tennessee Doctor Accused of Trying to Poison His Wife's Coffee Watch Video

Dr. Pierre Gholam, a liver specialist at University Hospitals in Cleveland, said he has seen an uptick in wild mushroom poisonings in his area, too. More than two dozen patients have arrived in the past three years with telltale mushroom poisoning symptoms, he said, including diarrhea followed by kidney and liver failure.

Gholam, who spoke to ABC News by phone from a meeting of the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases in Boston, said doctors there from across the country report similar increases in mushroom poisoning patients, even in areas not typically known for mushroom poisonings, such as the Midwest.

Specialists historically see case clusters in Northern California and in the Northeast.

"Clearly, there is something that has changed, in my mind, that has led to more mushroom poisoning cases," he said. "It looks like a nationwide phenomenon."

The reasons are unclear but Gholam suggested that more people could be picking their own mushrooms in the bad economy to save money.

Gholam's hospital is one of only a few authorized by the federal government to give patients an antidote called silibinin, which blocks the poison from attacking the liver. Fourteen patients have come from up to 150 miles away for the life-saving drug.

The poison in these mushrooms is called amatoxin, and it's colorless and odorless, so people who pick or eat them won't know until it's too late, Gholam said. The poison fungi can also come in different sizes and shapes. Cooking or freezing the mushrooms does not deactivate the toxin.

Typically, people begin to feel sick within six hours of eating the mushrooms, and come down with severe diarrhea, which causes dehydration and kidney failure, he said. Without the antidote, liver failure can set in after 72 hours, and the needs a liver transplant after 96 hours.

"I think at this point, it is absolutely critical to spread the word -- especially to folks that picked mushrooms -- that the landscape has changed," Gholam said.

    Glencore shareholders back Xstrata merger

(AP) ? Shareholders in Glencore International PLC, one of the world's biggest commodity traders, have voted to approve a merger with Anglo-Swiss mining company Xstrata PLC.

The company says the deal won approval from 99 percent of Glencore's investors. Xstrata shareholders will vote later Tuesday.

However the merged company, which would have a $70 billion market capitalization, still requires antitrust approval from regulators in the European Union and China.

Glencore already is the largest shareholder in Xstrata, with a 34 percent stake. The next biggest shareholder is the sovereign-wealth fund Qatar Holding LLC, with a 12 percent stake.

Glencore is based in the Swiss town of Baar but has its main stock listing in London. Xstrata is based in the neighboring city of Zug.
