Dion Nash slams the New Zealand batsmen after losing the Galle Test ? Cricket News Update
Disappointed after New Zealand?s miserable performance in the first Test of the series against Sri Lanka, Dion Nash, the former Black Caps? cricketer, has slammed the team?s batting performance but feels that the bowlers did an exceptional job.
Ross Taylor won the toss and elected to bat first at Galle, where the pitch was expected to favour the spinners in the latter stages of the match. Brendon McCullum and Daniel Flynn scored half-centuries but the rest of the batting line-up failed to cope with Rangana Herath.
The bowlers did well to limit the home team to just 247, although Sri Lanka took a 26-run lead in the first innings. It was widely expected that the Kiwi batsmen will give a competitive target to their Sri Lankan counterparts in the last innings of the match but that was not to be as the inexperienced batting line-up crumbled under pressure and the whole side were bowled out for just 118 runs, in less than 45 overs, which is not acceptable in Test cricket.
As a result, the Lankans won the match by 10 wickets and took an unassailable lead in the series. Nash believes that the batsmen have let the team down more often than not in recent times. However, he showered praise on the likes of Tim Southee, Jeetan Patel and Trent Boult.
?It's disappointing and I think there is the temptation to put it in the light of the failures, if you like, that have happened in the last two or three months,? said the former cricketer. ?It's obviously a batter failure and an inability to adjust to quite difficult conditions and some good bowling. I thought our bowling was pretty exceptional.?
The former seam bowler feels that the current lot of young Kiwi batsmen is not good enough to deliver the goods against world-class bowlers.
Nash mentioned, ?I think they don't have the skills at the moment. Fundamentally it's a tough job to bat in that top five. It isn't easy to play and succeed in those positions. International cricket is tough and test cricket is the toughest version of it.?
