How to Use Content Marketing to Convey Your Brand Message ...

convey your message with integrated digital marketing copy

In today?s digital milieu, marketers are becoming ever more reliant on written, auditory, and visual content media to inform, entertain, and otherwise address the needs of their target audience. In this way, content has become a vital tool for giving substance to a company?s vision and articulating its brand message. However, a well-developed content marketing plan should consist of more than a random string of repurposed content pieces; it should be part of an integrated digital marketing strategy that uses numerous content media to seamlessly convey a company?s brand message.

Here?s a quick example.

THE BRAND MESSAGE

Meet Wendy?s Web Design (WWD), a small B2B company specializing in?web design. With only 10 employees (including Wendy), WWD is a firm believer that all small business websites should be built using the HTML5 markup language with responsive web design (RWD).

In other words, Wendy has a clear vision, which she?s crystalized into a simple brand message that reads something like this: ?HTML5/RWD sites are the future of the Internet. Your company needs one now.?

Wendy has already built WWD?s site using HTML5/RWD and set up profiles on the major social media platforms relevant to her business. Now she?s ready to build a content strategy that articulates her core brand message. Wendy knows this content will need to educate, inform, entertain, and resolve.

WRITTEN CONTENT

Wendy decides to start by creating a foundational eBook that explains more about HTML5/RWD technologies, and why small businesses should consider using them to design/redesign their company website. She writes the copy, and works with her graphic designer to create some cool images and graphics to give the eBook some visual punch. She also makes sure to include social share buttons on each page to make it more interactive.

WWD uses a marketing automation system. Wendy asks her designer to create a really eye-popping call-to-action (CTA) linking to a catchy landing page where readers can download the new eBook free of charge. Her designer also creates an eMail lead-nurturing campaign offering relevant top, middle, and bottom-of-the-funnel content via periodic eMails to those who download the eBook.

Next, Wendy drafts a number of blogs, each one exploring various sub-themes of her eBook in greater detail. She includes the CTA at the bottom of each blog to ensure interested parties become marketing leads.

AUDITORY CONTENT

Reflecting on the fact that many small business owners (target audience) like her are really busy, Wendy decides to experiment with a few new content media - audio blogs. To begin with, she simply reads out each blog, recording and uploading it as an embedded MP3 file with a link placed next to her written blog title. This way, people can listen to her blogs while they are driving, working out, cleaning, etc.

VISUAL CONTENT

Knowing that she wants to build up her video portfolio on YouTube (the 2nd largest search engine on Earth, behind Google), she decides to record a series of videos that touch on various aspects of the web design process, such as how to protect your online assets during a site redesign. She shares these videos over WWD?s social media sites, embedding each one in Facebook and Pinterest.

Wendy?s graphic designer suggests Wendy record a webinar reviewing the entire website redesign process. They decide to pre-record the webinar rather than host it live; WWD then issues it as a separate content piece.

A few of the WWD crew decide to have some fun creating a slide-share deck of the crappiest websites they can find on the Internet. Calling it the ?How Not To Guide For Website Redesign?, they post it on their website and various social platforms.

One of Wendy?s co-workers is really into Instagram. She decides to take a series of photos of the WWD crew in action at the office then create a photo collage which she can share on WWD's Facebook page.

Thanks to WWD?s use of HTML5/RWD, Wendy?s web-based content plays well on most mobile devices.

A true convert to integrated digital marketing, Wendy has many more ideas as to how she can use content to articulate WWD?s unique brand message, but she decides to save them for next month?s campaign. After all, Wendy doesn?t want to overwhelm her target audience?

Higgs boson announcement awaited

Scientists at Europe's CERN research center said Wednesday that they may be able to definitively announce at a conference next March that they had discovered the elusive Higgs boson.

But they dismissed suggestions circulating widely on blogs and even in some science journals that instead of just one type of the elementary particle they might have found a pair.

CERN researchers said in July they had found what appeared to be the particle that gives mass to matter, as imagined and named half a century ago by theoretical physicist Peter Higgs. But they stopped short of saying for sure it was the Higgs boson, pending further research.

"The latest data we have on this thing we have been watching for the past few months show that it is not simply 'like a Higgs' but is very like a Higgs," said Oliver Buechmuller of the CMS team at CERN's Large Hadron Collider.

"The way things are going, by the Moriond meeting we may be able to stop calling it Higgs-like and finally say it is the Higgs," he told Reuters, referring to the annual gathering that will take place at the Italian Alpine resort of La Thuile, 120 kilometers (75 miles) from CERN, on March 2-9.

Suggestions that there may be two Higgs, a particle that made formation of the universe possible after the Big Bang 13.7 billion years ago, emerged after a progress report by CERN scientists last week. Its definitive discovery that would almost certainly win a Nobel Prize.

Commentators, including one in the journal Scientific American, said differing measurements, so far unexplained, of the new boson's mass that were recorded by ATLAS ? a parallel but separate research team to CMS at CERN ? indicated there might be twin particles.

"That is quite an exaggeration," said Pauline Gagnon, a scientist with ATLAS. "The facts are so much simpler: we measure one quantity in two different ways and obtain two slightly different answers.

"However, when we combine all the information, we clearly get only one value. Since we have checked all other possibilities, it really looks like a statistical fluctuation. Such things happen."

Buechmueller, whose CMS team found no such variation in their measurements, said he agreed there was no special relevance in the ATLAS discrepancy. "It will probably disappear when more data is in and analyzed," he added.

The $10 billion Large Hadron Collider, a 27-km (17-mile) circular construct deep under the Franco-Swiss border, will shut down for about two years in February to allow a doubling of its power and its capacity to probe cosmic mysteries.

How the NRA Defeats National Tragedies

National Rifle Association (NRA) CEO Wayne LaPierre

National Rifle Association CEO Wayne LaPierre addresses the NRA Leadership Forum on April 13, 2012, in St. Louis

You might think that ?spokesman for the National Rifle Association? is the toughest job in PR. You might be wrong. At least once a year, and several times in bad years, reporters reach out to the NRA?s Andrew Arulanandam and ask him whether the gun lobby has anything to say about the latest massacre. Arulanandam says basically the same thing, every time.

After the April 16, 2007, Virginia Tech shootings that killed 32 people: ?The NRA joins the entire country in expressing our deepest condolences to the families of Virginia Tech University and everyone else affected by this horrible tragedy. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families.?

After the Feb. 14, 2008, shootings at Northern Illinois University that killed six: ?We think it is poor form for a politician or a special interest group to try to push a legislative agenda on the back of any tragedy. Now is the time for the Northern Illinois University community to grieve and to heal. We believe there is adequate time down the road to debate policy and politics."

After the April 3, 2009, massacre at a Binghamton, N.Y., immigration center that killed 13: ?Now is not the time to debate politics or discuss policy. It's time for the families and communities to grieve.?

After the Jan. 8, 2011, shooting spree that wounded Rep. Gabrielle Giffords and killed six: ?At this time, anything other than prayers for the victims and their families would be inappropriate.?

After the July 20, 2012, massacre at an Aurora, Colo., theater that left 12 dead and 58 wounded: ?We believe that now is the time for families to grieve and for the community to heal. There will be an appropriate time down the road to engage in political and policy discussions.?

The ?appropriate time? never arrives. It?s an ingenious communications strategy, one that removes the NRA from stories about the latest national outrages. When the outrage fades, the NRA returns in full flush. Just a week before the Newtown, Conn., shootings, Arulanandam told a reporter that the NRA was ?planning for the worst? and had ?told people to plan for gun bans and a Supreme Court stacked with anti-gun judges.?

This was more honest. The gun lobby hasn?t faced a serious legislative defeat since the 1994 passage of the Assault Weapons Ban. At the time, 62 percent of Americans were telling the Gallup Poll that they wanted stricter laws on firearm sales, and 57 percent favored the semi-automatic gun ban. In 2011, support for both of those concepts had fallen to 43 percent. (According to a new Washington Post poll, support for these proposals has grown, but they still haven?t reach 1990s levels.) The NRA hasn?t lost any kind of vote on gun legislation since 1999, in the months after Columbine, when a background check bill got 50 votes in the Senate. The five Republicans who voted ?aye? are all gone, and Al Gore?s tiebreaking ?aye? became a focus of the NRA?s campaign against him.

The gun lobby took two lessons from that vote. One: They couldn?t lose unless a mass killing started a backlash and months-long discussion of new gun laws. Two: Gun owners fear those backlashes and respond to them by buying more guns and demanding to be permitted to carry them in more places.

Those insights have resulted in more than a decade of untrammeled gun lobby influence, based on some misconceptions and fueled by all-American paranoia. The moment that gun enthusiasts become aware of a massacre, they make the leap: This is the way our firearms will be ripped from our warm, live hands. On Friday, it took only a few minutes for participants on the Indiana Gun Owners forums to speculate about a coming ban.

Newtown shooting highlights Russia's gun-control debate

The Newtown school massacre, heavily covered by Russian media, has shed light on a long-simmering debate within Russian society over the wisdom of allowing freer civilian access to firearms.

At present, Russia is one of those countries that gun control opponents often cite with grim satisfaction to bolster the claim that there is no connection between gun ownership and murder. Though Russia today has one of the toughest gun control regimes in the world, its homicide rate is more than twice that of the US.

Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev, who authored laws to tighten access to weapons while he was president, seized on the US school tragedy to reiterate his viewpoint that even tougher gun control is needed in Russia.

Think you know the Second Amendment? Take our quiz.

Newtown "was a terrible tragedy. It is deeply distressing," Mr. Medvedev wrote on his Facebook page Monday. "I fully agree with those who are against free weapon possession. This is my principal position as well. By no means should we go down that road."

In Russia, private possession of handguns and any type of automatic weapon is banned outright. The procedure to obtain a hunting rifle is extremely daunting, as Rafail Ruditsky, head of the Saiga gun club in Moscow, explains:

Get our FREE 2013 Global Security Forecast now

"First you have to get three medical documents [to prove you're in good mental health and not on drugs], then you need to go to a specialized medical institution for a full check up. Now you're ready to apply for a gun license," he says.

"It's a good idea to apply for a hunting license at the same time, since that makes it easier but takes a couple weeks. When you have all these documents ready, with a few photos, you go to the local police with your passport to fill in an application. After you pay the fee, it will take up to a month to get your license," he adds.

"If you want to buy a rifle, you'd better get a strongbox first, because if you are buying a weapon, you'd better be prepared for regular police visits [to your home] to check on how your weapon is stored, if all rules are observed, if it's within the reach of children, etc," Mr. Ruditsky says.

Some civil society activists in Russia are arguing, in surprisingly American terms, that building true democracy in Russia requires more freedom to own and bear arms.

"World experience shows that the availability of arms raises the probability that criminal acts will be thwarted and also provides a deterrent effect: Criminals fear not only the police but average citizens, as well," says a statement on the website of Civil Security, a Russian pro-gun lobby.

"Unfortunately [our authorities] either underestimate the importance of the problem or pursue self-interest in their rigid opposition to the idea that citizens should be enabled to protect themselves," it says.

According to the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, the most authoritative source, the US had 4.8 homicides per 100,000 people in 2011 compared to a Russian rate of 10.2 in 2010, the last year for which figures are available.

It's impossible to compare rates of gun homicide, since Russian figures are unavailable. But most anecdotal evidence suggests that the majority of Russian murders originate in domestic disputes, often fueled by alcohol, and the choice of weapons tends to be primitive.

Many observers have pointed out that the US, on the other hand, has the highest per capita rate of gun ownership in the world, and a gun homicide rate that's 20 times the average of other developed countries.

And despite all the restrictions, Russia does witness the occasional gun massacre. Last month, an apparently deranged young man, Dmitry Vinogradov, walked into his former girlfriend's Moscow workplace with two rifles registered under his own name, and killed six people before he was subdued by security guards.

According to Sergei Zainullin, deputy chairman of Russia's Association of Gun Owners, says the weak point in the system ? like so many other things in Russia ? is corruption.

"The license system works pretty well, but it does happen quite often that people pay to get fake medical certificates" and other needed documents, he says.

"I think that Russia should move on to a system of public control, like the European gun club system" where weapons are stored and regulated by clubs, instead of the state strictly managing every detail, Mr. Zainullin adds.

(AP) ? Eager for a new challenge and certainly a better chance to win, R.A. Dickey broke the news of his trade even before the Toronto Blue Jays and New York Mets.

A few minutes ahead of the teams announcing the seven-player swap Monday that sent the NL Cy Young Award winner to Toronto, he tweeted his thanks to Mets fans and added he was all set to pitch for the Blue Jays.

"Now that its official, I want to say that I don't have the words to express how grateful I am to you for the steadfast support," Dickey posted on Twitter. "Thank you for making me feel wanted."

"Looking forward to a new chapter with the Jays," he wrote.

Toronto acquired the 38-year-old knuckleballer and catchers Josh Thole and Mike Nickeas. The Mets got top catching prospect Travis d'Arnaud and veteran catcher John Buck, plus minor league right-hander Noah Syndergaard and outfielder Wuilmer Becerra.

"It was an extraordinary privilege for us to be part of his career," Mets general manager Sandy Alderson said about Dickey on a conference call. "The final chapter has not been written."

Earlier in the day, Dickey and the busy Blue Jays agreed to a new contract, clearing the way for the Mets to send him to a team that's spending a lot of money trying to join baseball's elite. Toronto has now acquired All-Stars Jose Reyes, Josh Johnson, Mark Buehrle, Melky Cabrera and Dickey since the season ended.

Dickey was already signed for $5.25 million next year. His new contract adds two more seasons for $25 million ? he will get $12 million in both 2014 and 2015, plus there's a club option for 2016 at $12 million with a $1 million buyout.

"We're just so close to contention," Blue Jays general manager Alex Anthopoulos said. "It's not just about one season. This allows us to put what we feel is a contending team together for an extended run, for a three-to-five-year period."

Dickey needed to pass a physical before the teams announced the deal. He became the fourth pitcher to win the Cy Young and be traded before the next season, joining David Cone, Pedro Martinez and Roger Clemens.

Alderson said the Mets' preference going into the offseason was to re-sign Dickey. But as the winter meetings approached in early December, Alderson said Dickey's value "in a possible trade was also sky-rocketing. At some point, those lines crossed."

Several teams made runs at a deal for Dickey, with Texas and the Los Angeles Angels among those in the mix. Alderson said while some clubs popped in and out of trade talks, Toronto's interest remained steady.

Alderson said the Mets didn't completely decide to trade Dickey until they saw the final package that Toronto offered.

"This was a complicated deal," Alderson said.

The Blue Jays have missed the playoffs since winning their second straight World Series crown in 1993, and have boldly moved to reshape a team that went 73-89 last season in the rugged AL East.

Last month, they acquired a high-priced trio ? Johnson and Buehrle on the mound, Reyes at shortstop ? in a 12-player trade with the Miami Marlins.

Toronto later signed Cabrera, an All-Star outfielder with San Francisco whose season ended when he was suspended 50 games for a positive testosterone test.

Dickey was 20-6 with a 2.73 ERA last season, capping his rapid rise from the majors' scrap heap to an ace pitcher. He did it by perfecting a way to throw his floater faster than previous knuckleballers, and tossing it with exceptional control.

Dickey becomes part of a stellar Toronto rotation that includes Johnson, Buehrle and returning starters Ricky Romero and Brandon Morrow.

"We clearly are convinced this can be a front-line starter for us," Anthopoulos said. "I don't think he gets the credit or the respect he deserves because of his age, and because of what he does throw. And I understand because it's so rare.

"But there's so much overwhelming data and evidence that points to him continuing to have this success."

Thole gives the Blue Jays a catcher who is familiar with handling Dickey's knuckleball, and Anthopoulos said that relationship was a key to the deal.

"R.A. is too important to our chances to take a chance and have a tryout camp to see if someone can catch him," he said.

Thole joins a lineup that features former home run champ Jose Bautista and Edwin Encarnacion, who hit 42 homers last season.

Despite a big spot in the rotation to fill minus Dickey, Alderson said the Mets were not giving up on next season.

"We certainly are not punting on 2013," he said.

D'Arnaud turns 24 in February. He hit .333 at Triple-A Las Vegas with 16 homers and 52 RBIs before tearing a knee ligament trying to break up a double play in June. He has been an All-Star at several levels during his climb through the minors.

Alderson called d'Arnaud the top catching prospect in the minors and predicted he could contribute on the major league level next year.

"As painful as it was to trade the kids that we did trade, it might be three or four years down the road before they become All-Star status, or whatever is going to happen to them," Anthopoulos said. "At that time Reyes could be gone, Buehrle could be gone, Bautista could be gone, Encarnacion could be gone. We have no idea what our core will look like."

Popular with Mets fans, Dickey perturbed team management when he spoke about his contract situation last week during a club event at Citi Field for children displaced from their schools by Superstorm Sandy.

Dickey said he enjoyed playing for the Mets and added it would be "disappointing" if he went through his option year without a new deal and became a free agent.

"If that's the decision that they make, I feel like it would be unfortunate because it probably is going to mean that I'm not going to be back," Dickey said then. "And that would be sad."

Buck was an All-Star with Toronto in 2010. The 32-year-old hit .192 with 12 home runs and 41 RBIs for Miami last season, then was part of the big trade between Marlins and Blue Jays.

The 20-year-old Syndergaard went 8-5 with a 2.60 ERA for Class A Lansing. The 18-year-old Becerra hit .250 with four RBIs in 11 games in the rookie Gulf Coast League.

Thole hit .234 with one homer and 21 RBIs in 104 games last season. The 26-year-old played four seasons with the Mets.

Nickeas split last season with the Mets and Triple-A Buffalo. The 29-year-old hit .174 with one homer and 13 RBIs for New York.

Stun gun used on 3 elderly Mennonite women

Police say three elderly Mennonite women were tied up and attacked with a stun gun during a violent home invasion near Lancaster, Pa.

The suspect posed as an insurance salesman to gain access into the Clay township home on Friday, according to investigators.

Police say the man raged against the women's faith in a hate-filled attack, ransacking the house, pouring chemicals on the floors and furniture.

The suspect wasn't done there. Authorities say at one point, he read passages from the women's Bible before vandalizing it, claiming that he himself was once a Mennonite.

He then fled with cash and other valuables.

The victims, between 84 and 90 years old, were found several hours later by a relative.

They remain hospitalized.

Obama to speak Sunday at Connecticut vigil for shooting victims

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Barack Obama plans to travel to Newtown, Connecticut, on Sunday to meet with families of the victims of a Friday school shooting that was one of the deadliest such incidents in the nation's history.

The White House said in a statement Obama will speak at a 7 p.m. EST Sunday interfaith vigil for families of the victims and other students from Sandy Hook Elementary School, which was attacked on Friday by a heavily armed gunman.

In his weekly radio and internet address earlier on Saturday, Obama said it was time to "take meaningful action to prevent more tragedies like this."

But he stopped short of specifically calling for tighter gun-control laws.

Mozilla looks back at 2012, finds many of us choosing Do Not Track

Footprints in the sand

It's been a time of reflection for search engine teams, so why not for web browsers? Mozilla has taken its own trip back through 2012 and found that a surprising number of us have embraced Do Not Track. About 8 percent of desktop users, and 19 percent of Android users, have adopted the feature as of the end of year -- that's a clear sign of interest in keeping web habits private, Mozilla claims. While we don't have similar statistics for other browsers to add context, the company still sees a lot of sunshine with the rapid development of Firefox OS and recent additions like its Social API. If Mozilla's introspection proves intriguing, many more details await at the source.

China to ensure appropriate bank loan growth in 2013: Xinhua

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, who canceled an overseas trip last weekend because of illness, suffered a concussion after fainting due to dehydration, prompting the postponement of her scheduled congressional testimony on the attack on a U.S. mission in Libya, officials said on Saturday. "While suffering from a stomach virus, Secretary Clinton became dehydrated and fainted, sustaining a concussion," State Department spokesman Philippe Reines said in a statement. "She has been recovering at home and will continue to be monitored regularly by her doctors. ...

Five Presentation Mistakes Everyone Makes - Harvard Business ...

We all know what it's like to sit through a bad presentation. We can easily spot the flaws ? too long, too boring, indecipherable, what have you ? when we watch others speak. The thing is, when we take the stage ourselves, many of us fall into the same traps.

Here are five of the most common, along with some tips on how to avoid them.

1. Failing to engage emotionally. You risk losing your audience when you just "state the facts," even in a business setting. No presentation should be devoid of emotion, no matter how cerebral the topic or the audience. Speak to people's hearts as well as their minds. Look for ways to add emotional texture to your exhibits, data, proofs, logical arguments, and other analytical content. Try opening with a story your audience can relate to, for example, or including analogies that make your data more meaningful.

To unearth the emotional appeal of your ideas, ask yourself a series of "why" questions. If you're requesting funding to pay for cloud storage, for instance, start by asking, "Why do we need cloud storage?" Your answer may be something like "to facilitate data sharing with colleagues in remote locations." Then ask why you need to accomplish that ? and you'll eventually get to the human beings who will be affected by your ideas. Suppose your answer is "to help remote colleagues coordinate disaster relief efforts and save lives." That's your emotional hook. Once you've found it, it's easier to choose words and images that elicit empathy and support.

2. Asking too much of your slides. PowerPoint can be a great tool. But know what you're trying to accomplish with it. Do only that, nothing more. Problems crop up when you place too many elements in a slide deck. If you cram in all the points you're going to cover so you won't forget anything, you'll end up projecting entire documents when you speak. (Garr Reynolds aptly calls these hydra-headed beasts "slideuments.") No one wants to attend a plodding read-along. It's boring, and people can read more efficiently on their own, anyway. So don't try to spell everything out bullet by exhausting bullet. Keep your teleprompter text hidden from the audience's view, in the "notes" field, and project only visuals that reinforce your ideas. And if you need to circulate documents afterward? Create handouts from all that text you've pulled off your slides and moved into "notes."

3. Trotting out tired visuals. Nothing gets eyes a-glazing like a visual clich?. Want your presentation to stand out (in a good way) from the others your audience has seen? Brainstorm lots of visual concepts ? and throw away the first ones that came to mind. They're the ones that occur to everyone else, too. That's why you've seen them a million times in other people's presentations. Generate several ideas for each concept you want to illustrate, and you'll work your way toward originality.

visualmetaphor200.jpeg

4. Speaking in jargon. Have you ever listened to a presenter who sounded super-smart without having any idea what she really said? If so, the presentation was probably full of jargon. Each field has its own lexicon that's familiar to experts but foreign to everyone else. Unless you're speaking to a group of people who are steeped in the material themselves, you're better off avoiding highly technical or industry-specific language. Use words that will resonate with those whose support and influence you must earn. If they can't follow your ideas, they won't adopt them. Consider whether your presentation passes the "grandmother test": If your grandmother wouldn't understand what on earth you're talking about, rework your message.

5. Going over your allotted time. There's nothing worse than a presentation that seems like it will never end. A great talk goes by quickly. People in your audience will never scold you for ending early, but they certainly will for ending late. So treat the time slot assigned to you as sacred. And keep in mind that people have a 30- to 40-minute presentation tolerance (they're conditioned by TV shows with creatively produced commercial breaks). Go longer than that, and they're sure to squirm.

This is the seventh and final post in Nancy Duarte's blog series on creating and delivering presentations, based on tips from her new book, the HBR Guide to Persuasive Presentations.

Gifts for iPhone photographers: 2012 holiday guide

Gifts for iPhone photographers: 2012 holiday guide

The iPhone is equipped with an excellent camera that has the effect of turning people into photography enthusiasts and iPhone photographers known as "iPhoneographers". If you know one such person, the good news is that there tons of great products available that photography-loving friend or family will be excited to receive as a gift this holiday season.

Olloclip 3-in-one lens system

The Olloclip 3-in-on lens system is a great gift for any iPhone user, but photography enthusiasts will really appreciate it. This tiny little accessory is equipped with macro, wide-angle, and fisheye lenses that slip over the iPhone's built-in camera. This great little kit is small enough to carry in your pocket, yet makes the iPhone's camera a lot more versatile. If your photography-loving friend doesn't already own an Olloclip, I guarantee s/he has been dying to get one.

Glif Tripod Mount & Stand

The Glif Tripod Mount & Stand is great for the iPhoneographers who are into self portraits, night photography, or other types of photography that require a tripod. It's a small little accessory that snugly holds the iPhone and attaches to a tripod. In addition to working as a tripod adapter, the Glif can also be used as a stand that props up the iPhone in various angles for handsfree use like watching movies or FaceTiming.

There are two different versions of the Glif available: Glif and Glif+. The Glif+ is a deluxe package that includes a Serif and Ligature. The Serif is an additional piece that is designed to keep your iPhone even more secure on a tripod and stores snuggly inside the Glif when not in use. The Ligature is a simple keyring loop that attaches to the tripod thread on the Glif so that the Glif can be attached to your keychain, backpack, or purse so that it's always with you and available.

GripTight GorillaPod Stand

For the more extreme iPhone photographer, the GripTight GorillaPod might be a better tripod option. The grippy leg joints on this tripod bend and rotate 360 degrees allowing you to secure your iPhone to just about anything including trees, bars, rocks, benches, fences, and more. The new adjustable grip fits all iPhones with or without a case making this gift useful even when the recipient upgrades to the next iPhone.

Lifeproof Case

It's not uncommon for a photographer to do whatever it takes to get that perfect shot... providing it doesn't cause destruction to their camera. A Lifeproof Case will offer your photographer friend the best possible protection to their iPhone allowing them to take photo in even the most extreme conditions, including under water! Lifeproof also makes a GoPro adapter and bike and bar mounts so that you can attach your iPhone to your head, bike, waist, and more.

Retina iPad

One of the best companions for the iPhone photographer is a Retina iPad. The gorgeous screen on the Retina iPad allows photographers to show off their photos in all their glory as well as choose from a wide selection of photo editing apps in the App Store. Sure, the iPhone has both of these things too, but when it comes to photography, bigger is better!

iPhoto for iPhone and iPad

Speaking of photo editing apps, Apple's iPhoto is a great and affordable app to get for that photography-loving friend or family member. iPhoto includes multi-touch editing, brushes, high-quality effects, photo journals, and more. What I, personally, love about iPhoto is that even though it isn't the most powerful photo editing app available, it has more than most people need and is super easy to use making it great for quick edits.

Beck's Song Reader - Stylus Magazine // The Only New Music and ...

Pretentious stunt or effective artistic experiment?
by Shanell Dupras

CDs, MP3s, LPs. These are the words most of us are familiar with when buying our music in the 21st century. Any other forms of music are inconvenient. In a day and age when everything is all about the convenience, Beck has decided to do a little experiment; to go back to the inconvenient; to release his next album only as sheet music. This new album, titled Song Reader, consists of 108 pages of music notation and original art. What?s intriguing is that the only way to hear the songs aloud are to both read and play them yourselves, or sign up for a mailing list to hear other fans? renditions. The one question on everyone?s mind is: will it work?

There have already been plenty of different opinions on Beck?s little experiment, some very positive, some ? not so much. Some comments online so far have been ?Beck, get your lazy ass in the studio and make your own album;? ?Releasing something that only appeals to a small percentage of your fan base is a huge step backwards;? ?And the gold medal for pretentiousness goes to Beck!!!? It appears that the fans are so far not too keen. It?s obvious as to why; for any fans that aren?t able to read notation this is a slight slap in the face.

The question remains: will this work?

Professionals appear to be hopeful. Wade Nelson, a Rhetoric and Communications professor at the University of Winnipeg believes that ?it?s both clever and smart-assed (in the best possible way)? Of course, it doesn?t solve any problems, and perhaps creates a few, but that doesn?t mean that the project isn?t worthy of attention. And at the very least, it gets people talking about the current state of affairs in the music industry.?

Nelson is one of many who would have to wait until these songs are recorded before getting to hear them. ?It unfortunately takes too much of an effort to consume, and I suspect that most folks are not invested enough in this sort of thing to actually make it happen for themselves.? Song Reader is worth trying, but will it be worthwhile?

Zane Zalis, a composer ? who has worked with the WSO ? and high school music teacher, has a slightly more optimistic view of Beck?s efforts: ?I welcome it. I embrace the idea. I think it will be a challenge for most people in popular culture.? As a composer, Zalis sees the good in sheet music that recordings alone may not offer. ?The eyes catch what the ears miss and the ears catch what the eyes miss? I think the power comes when the two come together? the notated word has a lot to offer, the recording has a lot to offer.? As of right now, Beck has not announced the release of a recorded album with these tracks; however, some fans don?t seem to mind.

Rather than recording the album himself, Beck has decided to let the fans do it instead. Beck has recently launched a website called songreader.net, where fans can sign up and submit their versions of his songs. Even before the album?s release, some fans have showed interest. The last time I peeked at the page (and this number is most likely different now), there were three versions of the song ?Do We? We Do? as well as four versions of the song ?Old Shanghai,? all using the exact same notation, with drastically different results. One band, Bradley Dean Whyte and the Perfectly Violent Dream, has gone so far that they not only wished to record ?Do We? We Do,? but has hopes to produce the entire Beck album, and play concerts with the material as well.

One thing?s for sure; Beck has seen more publicity than he has in quite some time due to this attempt. Zalis hopes that this project will spark interest in young music lovers to learn how to read notation, but has hesitations; ?I don?t think we can [go backwards], but I do know that we seem to embrace something new and novel, get excited, then our short attention spans take off and we go do something else.?

This has sparked our interest, but for how long? And will any fans use this as an excuse to learn how to read music notation?

Song Reader appears to be an interesting project, but along with it come plenty of possibilities, plenty of slaps in the face, and plenty of questions. Before deciding to take on the challenge that is Song Reader, Zalis has a few questions to ask yourself first: ?Are you willing to go through this to achieve the reward? Do you see the reward great enough? Is it really about the Beck piece or about learning the symbolic code of a language so that you can enjoy many others??

This, and many other questions, will have to wait to be answered until the release on December 7th.

Rihanna to star in, produce fashion reality show

Jason Merritt / Getty Images

By Eric Kelsey, Reuters

Chart-topping R&B star Rihanna is delving into the world of fashion, starring in a reality television show competition that will challenge designers to make outfits for a handful of celebrities, U.S. cable channel Style Network said on Wednesday.

"Styled to Rock," set to premiere in the latter half of 2013, will feature 12 young designers handpicked by the Barbadian Grammy-winning singer.?

The designers will be tasked with styling a celebrity guest on each episode, and the guest will help determine which designer moves on to the next round of the competition.?

"Fashion has always played an integral part in my life and career. I am so excited to partner with Style Network and share my creative insight with these 12 designers and give them this opportunity to showcase their work," Rihanna, 24, said in a statement.

The singer will also serve as an executive producer under her given name, Robyn Rihanna Fenty. Style Network has yet to announce which celebrities will guest host or the fashion experts who will serve as mentors to contestants.?

The series will piggyback on a British show of the same name in which Rihanna appeared over the summer.?

The "Diamonds" singer recently concluded a seven-date globe-trotting tour in support of her new album "Unapologetic," which debuted atop the Billboard 200 album chart last week.?

Style Network is a unit of Comcast Corp's NBCUniversal.

Quake strikes off Japan, sets off small tsunami

TOKYO (CNN) ?

A powerful earthquake struck off the northeast coast of Japan on Friday evening, rattling buildings in Tokyo and setting off a small tsunami.

It also jarred nerves in a nation still recovering from the devastating earthquake and tsunami in March 2011 that killed thousands of people and triggered the world's worst nuclear crisis in a quarter century.

Some roads were closed and rail services suspended in the northeastern prefecture of Miyagi, where a one-meter (3-foot) tsunami rolled ashore. It was followed by four other waves ranging from eight to 16 inches. Only minor injuries were reported immediately, including five in Miyagi and five on the outskirts of Tokyo.

Miyagi was one of the areas that suffered the worst of the destruction from the 9.0-magnitude quake and resulting tsunami in 2011.

The weaker, 7.3-magnitude quake on Friday took place further out at sea -- 462 kilometers (287 miles) east-northeast of Tokyo at a depth of 36 kilometers (22 miles) -- the U.S. Geological Survey said, slightly revising the initial location it gave.

It didn't create a widespread threat of a tsunami in the Pacific, according to the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center.

The massive earthquake and tsunami in 2011 killed more than 15,000 people in Japan. It caused the formation of 30-foot walls of water that swept away rice fields, engulfed entire towns, and tossed houses and cars onto highways.

The combined natural disasters did severe damage to the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant, setting off meltdowns at reactors at the facility that contaminated a large area. No damage was reported at the country's nuclear power facilities after Friday's quake.

Radiation levels in fish caught near the area remain high long after the 2011 meltdowns, suggesting contamination from the site might still be seeping into Pacific waters, a U.S. researcher said in October.
