MARYBOROUGH'S Ashton family could return home from Melbourne within four weeks, after test results revealed Coen's transplanted lungs are healing well.
The family moved south 16 months ago to wait for a life-saving double-lung transplant for son Coen.
Coen, 15, has cystic fibrosis and diabetes and led a national campaign to encourage people to sign up as organ donors.
The campaign saw him jet ski the length of the Murray River and win both state and national Pride of Australia medals.
He finally had his own transplant last October, and test results showed on Monday that Coen had not rejected the new set of lungs, meaning the family can begin to prepare to come home.
Mum Dawn said the family could be settled back in Maryborough by the end of February.
Dawn said a return to Maryborough was both an exciting and a daunting prospect for her and husband Mark.
"It is something that we have been thinking about for so long," she said.
"We haven't had normal in a long time."
Dawn said Coen and his brother Kai were rearing to return home, but it will still be many months before Coen can rejoin his friends at school.
He will continue to learn through distance education while on immuno-suppressant medication.
Dawn urged people to continue to sign up as organ donors.
