Fremont and Union City: Work stoppage delays trash collection

FREMONT -- Garbage service has been delayed in Fremont and Union City due to an unanticipated work stoppage, city officials said Thursday.

Fremont city officials were notified Thursday morning by Allied Waste that the company wouldn't be making garbage or recycling pickups all day. The reason for the work stoppage wasn't immediately known, but it's the second time in about two weeks the stoppage has taken place there.

The company is asking residents to leave containers out and available for collection and said it will service them as soon as possible, adding it will be no later than the next scheduled service day.

In Union City, city officials released a statement that said its garbage labor dispute does not involve the city.

All single family residential customers with Thursday and Friday pickups won't be served and should not set out their blue trash carts, officials said. Next week, Thursday and Friday customers are being asked to place extra bags of trash out equivalent to their normal weekly amount of trash with their blue carts to picked up.

Recycling and green waste will be picked up as usual over the next couple of days, officials said.

Certain commercial customers in Union City will be served, and the list of such customers will be made public as soon as the city receives it from Allied Waste.

Commercial customers not on the list will not receive trash or recycling pickups, officials said, but will

receive green and food waste pickups.

Commercial customers with Saturday pickups may also experience service disruptions, but city officials said they won't know for sure until Saturday morning.

Earlier this month local Allied Waste employees halted garbage services in support of striking sanitation workers in Ohio.

Also joining the work stoppage earlier this month were sanitation drivers in Fairfield and Daly City, landfill workers in Half Moon Bay, and transfer station employees in Pacifica.

The local Teamsters halted services to support Youngstown, Ohio, employees on strike at Carbon Limestone Landfill, which is owned by Allied Waste's parent company, Republic Services.
